IlliJII IU VllUB IVOVVlIf V.J " ??VIV ? J'.IIIV J "er was wanting. I furnished him with i *'/. press and letters, in an agreement of 1 ''partnership, by which I was to recoiyc "one-third of the'profits of the business, , ''paying one-third of the expense. He J "was a man of learning and honest, but "ignorant in matters of account, and i "though he sometimes made me remit- i "tancc*, I could get no account from him "nor any satisfactory stnto of our partnership while ho lived. In his decease, "the partnership was continued by his "widow, who being born and bred in "Ireland, where, as I have been inform ea, mc Knowieuge 01 accounts iiiukcs < "a part of female education, she not on- i "ly sent me as rlose a statement as she i "could find of the transactions past, but continued to account with the greatest , "regularity and exactness eyery quarter ] ''afterwards, and managed the business ( "with such success, that sho not only ] "brought up reputably a family of chil- . *'dren, but, at the expiration of the term, ] "was able to purchase of me the printing house and establish her son in it.'' lligelow's Franklin,'.vol. i. p. 252-3. < The philosopher mentions this as a ' &ood reason, why our daughters should ' be instructed in this branch of cduca- 1 lion, as likely to be of more use to them I And their children, in case of widow- < 4iood, thon either music or dancing. ' While we agree with the writer in rec ommending this branch of education, , we do not see why music and dancing ^ should be neglected. The harmony of sweet sounds and the poetry of motion, ^ contribute as much to the enjoyment of * life, as the ability to keep accounts does to the regulaajitj* and order of housekeeping, when the husband is alive? ( andscttling up his estate after he is ( <icad. ( Our motive, in referring to the ex- < tract, is hot to criticise, but to noticc a f scrap of history. We suppose this to i bo the first newspaper established in { the State, but as neither the name of f the paper, nor of the editor are given, 1 we are not able to verify the statement. One good purpose is served, a very in- ( ?truclive and readable book is brought to the notico of our subscribers. End to Itone Scraplne: Edward Sheppard, of ITarrisburg, 111. says : "Having received so much benefit from Electric Bitters, 1 feel it my duty to let suffering humanity know it.
