The Abbeville Messenger. , M. L. BONHAM, JR.,) ivn T? P. COTIIRAN, [ pK?iI,KToH? ' JAS. 8. PERRIN, ) iROIKIKTUKH WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 18S5. ' THE MI1>IjAN1> llAlI?KOAl>. 1 A consolidation of the Greenville and Laurens llailroad and the Midland Hailroad has been effected, and (Jreenville and Charleston seetn awake to tli-* iniportanco of huilding the road. Mayor Courtney, of Chai lesion, has become interested in the inulter and was instruuicntul in making the consolidation. This is moving in the right direction, nrul it is to he hoped nothing will prevent the early building of the road. Now that Mayor Courtney has enlisted his splendid ability and indomitable energy in this behalf, we beg to call to his attention and that of the citizens of Charleston, another contemplated road, the building of which becomes of incalcu. lable benefit to Charleston, and to ensure tlie speedy completion of which needs but Charleston's endorsement and financial aid?we moan the Carolina, CumberJatid Gap and Chicago Railroad. The route that is entirely practicable is from Knstutoc Clap, where the l'due Ridge can llf* rpn<ci?.l Kv nil nnji' '1 o ? T .... -..-J p. w. About a innximum of 0(3 foot to tho mile, byway of Knstev, Pickens, Bolton, Puo West, Abbeville, Troy, Edjjofichl, Trenton and'Aiken. Its southern terminus could of course bo controlled by Charleston. In the counties of Pickens, Anderson, (Abbeville, Kdgefiehl and Aiken there are perhaps llfty miles of road already graded. Unco across the Blue Ridge, desirablo western connections become an immediate possibility. And thus, with the Midland road ] Charleston would have two routes to the , i West by which to pour the wealth of i < that favored region into her coders, j, The ships that now sail by her harbor would euter to bear these products to other lands, and Charleston's prosperity would become a fixed (net. On the, 1 other hand, in view of the building of j i this Midlnnd road, other corporations , j may find it advantageous, even necos- f sary, to securc the C. C. 0. & C. It. 11., j and direct it to another water terminus 1 ?perhaps Port Royal. In consideration \ of these facts, may it not be well for ' "Charleston to move in this matter? The ! Directors of the road meet on the 2i>th | inst., and we trust the citikens of Charles- 1 ton will by then lake steps looking to ' the end we have herein suggested. INTOLKHAXCi:. Mr. Boeclier is in trouble with his congregation because he supported Cleveland against Dlainc. A large faction, influential socially, politically and financially have arrayed themselves i against him with the determination to j drive him out or break up the church. Was there ever such arrogance or intol erance? By what right does this congregation assume to dictate how Jlr. Beecher.shall vote ? Had this incident i -occurred in the Sou'h, or rather if the J pastor of a Southern church wore assailed because he had voted the Itepub- > licaD ticket, what a howl of imlignatii n J would have gone up from the very men ( who, as Republicans, are proscribing Mr. Beecher and threatening him with financial ruin. We have observed thai in all things it makes the greatest diller?euce whose ox is gored. HDITOKIAIj NOTKS. The A ikon Journal cm? Jicvicw ' came to us last week printed on tinted paper. C. A number of important- measnres will conn; up before that body, and among them tin' Educational bill, will not he of the leas', importance. The Chronicle will soon cclebrnte it? ' ono-hundreth birthday and proposes to issue a centennial edition, which promises to be interesting and profitable. Few journals have 1 ad a longer career of usefulness and the honor than th.> Chronicle. C. A. Douglass, Ksrj., has withdrawi. from the News ami Herald, of Winnsboro, as associate editor. Mr. Douglass was a bright and versatile writer, and will bo missed from the rank.* of Corolina journalism. His place is lakm by W. K- McDonald, Kt?]?9 a talented young lawyer of Winnsboro.
