Conducted by the Farm Short and Timely Articles that will b Rocalved, and are Solicited for t On any Phaso or Subje t of THE ALDRICH SYSTEM. Gather in Hay and Hominy Between I the Rows of Cotton! More Co'op eration at Home in the Field 4 With Cotton, Corn and I Peas! I Fariers, don't. trust teo muchi to I others to help you, make an etffrt each anid every man of you to hel ) youlselves, try a few acres on the Aldrich system of growing two rows of cotton alternating with two rows of corn. There is nothig to lose in giving this plan a fair trial. Wo are suie that the two rows of early corn will not materially in1 jure the cotton We have been watching this syste m of plan ting t wo rows of Cotton and two rows of corn since this pl1an first con'e in. to notice, and have come to the c.m, clusion that there is somotliing in it, or about twonty good men we know havo Leen doiiig some good lieiing about this thing. At least four of our neighbors, as well as curselves, are to try several acres on this "Ald rich plan" this season. Some how or other we have got it into our heads that. there may he too much cottou on next fail, and inl case 4"omethit drops" we hope to have 1aoie food for both mian aid beast, and not trust to others for our fea8t. Our plaus are as follows: Whero our lands have already been lerti lized and prepared fur cotton, take a large (louble Jack plow aid throw dowi the whole cotton bed, with one furrow, mn two rows and plant early corn in bottom of these furrows, covering corn with small double-foot plow, then leave two rows for cotton, con t inuing t he whole field in this plain. This early corn will mature and be out of growth by the time when cotton needs all help possibe to I,-t on a good crop of fruiit anid retaini it. At the last plIowing of the corn rows wie are to sowv inoculated cow-peas in these corn) rows aheadl( of thle plow3. By this plan an acre pack nge of ijitroeniture will incolate two acres of land. Of course, we w ill not be able this season to bi: oculato all our pes but we will do as8 much as possible. Quite a nlumber of practical far mfer's report that they have made as much cotton to 11h0 acre undelr the Aldiich plan as they did by p)lant ing every row ml cottonl and have thu corni and peas as a profit to Le: credit of this pilant. Now, farmiers, be honest to everibs dy, cut a gooud n iumber' of acres ont this plan and let us hear from you. Yes, we may say to those who hav; no;t cut their acreage and are fe'eling bad about it, that this Ald rich plant will givo them a good op por tunity to reh ove their conscience anid at the same~i time1 give themi ai splenldid chance to imatke a pr< fit able cotton crop at mlost any old price and haive more corn, pOens andr fodder t hat br intg good prices aill t ho whil, atnd niever fails to brin g go'xd, fat hiogs, horses and cows. This may or may not be to th-ii cr-edit. The credit rests with thi euccepsful partiesa only. Lait voar the farmers of South Carolhua used 427,000 ton, Af commir.-ial fertilizers at an ap. prioxima1e cost of the enormous sum of$07,200.00. Thm youiger notion of cotton growers iii ouit Stateo have growln ito t i4 kiwd of thoughtless, Itin'kent habit of hook faringll until they n more now think"oi plaiting cotton without bougil ferilizer thll a b'esotoALud ram drinker would think of tahing a meal without his dran. 1I. th are habits of doubtful good resubs it, imaly cases. Since writing tih,) foregoing we haye had an interview with several farimera not far from Peidlet, om that tried this Aldrich system last season, and some of them will plait their whole crop this year oi, this plan. S. L. McCarlev, J. W. Durbarj and 0. Brock are among the farn era who have been successful with this system of mixed crops. These farimers explain that the corn roots feed near the surfaceo of the soil and the cotton roots go down deeper for their mai support. Now thero is good solid sense and reason in this, and another g-od reason for the remarkable results is that wido spaces betweei the double rows give more air space and sunlight, which is of great ad vantage to the fruitiiig of both corn and cottong.
