BRIGHT, County Supt. of Education The teacher's association will hold its next meeting on Saturday, October 28th, at Pickens. A treat is in store for. tho teachrs who at tend. Professors Haynes, Wyer, O'Dell and Langston will make talks on subjects that will instruct as well as entertain others, beside teachers. Trustees as well as pat rons would learn much that would be useful if they would attend. * * Some Obseryailons. During the time the schools run last July and August al; the time we could spare out of the ofhco was spent in visiting the schools as required by law. To perform all the dutie3 required of this office from the middle of July to the middle of October would keep two men busy all the time, hence tlese obscrvations may be a little late, much condensed, yet we hope some good may result from this publji cation. In some cases the houses have been inadequate to accommodate the pupils. They were crowded too much for comfort and were more in a state of punishment than we could recommend. The remedy n all such cases is more room with more windows. In some we find Lhe seats very bad and would sug. Iest that better ones be put in and he height be regulated to suit the ize of the pupil and if there were lesks, so much the better. In some cases the window and loor shutters are apparently lost Ahis might be remnedicd by using iings and making the teacher ac .ount for tho same during use. In all schools we f3und black. boards or something said to be t blackboard, many of them very near white. If you get a good live teacher lie will want, use and noed all the Eurface of the room not occupied by Geors and windows, as a blackboard. It is used by the best teache.. in giving instruction in all the studies and is a positive necessity. In many (asos wo found that the trustees made regular visits to the schools and gave aid and comfort tc the teacher. This is the right wvay to do and much good will be accornplished by the proper atten, tion to business. In many of the schools we fint the patrons are a little, negligent of somo of their duties. It is al leged that the children are not fur nished with books, slateos, etc., si as to enable the teacher to giv proper attention to some of th pupils. Mr. Patron do you sen< two or three children to the cottoi patch with one hoe and expect al much accoinplished as wiouild bh dune if all wero furnihi'd wvitl hoes? 'rho reputation of the teachel is at stake. Th'le futurt' usefulness of your child is at stake. Yor are the doctor. Now a lit tle for you brothle teacher01. 1Di d we find a1 programi shlowinig thie timo of oljyn,~then branches taught, ..I' 'time given to. each brancli-1~ id we find the T gs ofr at tihe school house and proporly kept? D)id we find on your tablo copies of the text-books you are exp~ected to teach. or didI we find you borrowing from somhe. of tho pupils to hoar tihe recitation? Did we find pupils advanced to the third raader who could not road fluently in the first, and you call ing two out of three words for him and lie mockingly roadling after you? Did we find more attention paidl to the higher than the lower grados~? Did we find y'ou more in terestod about your pay than the work you were hired to do?
