Frank Miles was convicted of arson and sentenced to . ten years in the penitentiary at hard labor. John Alston wYis acquitted of the charge of assault and battery j with intent to kill. James Calhoun, charged with assault and battery of a high and I aggravated nature, was acquitted. There was a true bill found against Ibsaac Bently for murder, , and the case was continued. John Marshall was tried for housebreaking and acquitted. The case against Berry Jenkins a et al. for resisting officer was nol prossed. The case against L. E. Chil dress, indicted for murder, was I transferred to Greenville county I for trial. Tho array of petit ju rors was challenged as to this case " and the challenge was sustained. Liberty is still quiet but firm. f b We will begin work on the oil mill in a few (lays. We have another candidate for c cotton weigher in the person of Job Smith and two or three more Smiths spoken of. We also have somc candidates for the penitenti- e ary. Some hungry tramps broke v in J. D. Smith's store and got a few coppers. They then visited l Dr. W. A. Sheldon's drug store ] whore they got a few more cents; thence to Hunter, Boggs & Co's. ' warehouse where they got a razor; ] they then visited the store taking a a pair of shoes and an umbrella. c Our marshal had an eye on some e suspicious tramps but could not S find any of the stolen goods. A t reward has been offored for the thieves. r We had a delightful rain last i Sabbath that kept us all from f church and Sabbath school. 1 The wheat is all threshed in our j town with about two-thirds of a 1, crop. Oats were fine. Crops are j, fine. Cotton is late for the season a and damaged badly by small in sects that are under the leaf. Mr. o Thomas Gassaway has eight acres c that is ruined by the lice. e We have heard that we havo a I roller mill in our county.
