DEAR BRETREN:-At a meeting of our executivo board we decided to lay our mission field before the State board and ask for aid. The Stato board has noblj responded to our petition, for notwithstand ing its embarrassed condition, it has agreed to help us to the amount of one hundred dollars. Let us show our appreciation of their kindness by trying to help) our selves. We would earnestly call upon every church in the association requnsting them to take up collec tions for Stato missions, so that wo may help the Stato Board In this work. We dlecidhed to turn over all mion eys collected for State Missions to the Stato Board, and present~ our most needy churches to it for help. The board has agreed to help the pastors taking charge of these churches, provided the churches will help to suipport their pastor. We request the pastors taking charge of these churches, to ascrer taini to what extent the churches are willing to aid in sup~port of a p~astor and inform us at once, as we have decided not to lot the board waste its money on a dead church. As we view the matter we have now gotten the work started in the right dlirection. Lot every one who believes the Scripture is true which requir'os that the strong should help to bear the infirmities of the weak, help in this work, and those who believo otherwise, may God in his mercy show thorn their error. LIBERTY, S. C., Fob. 5, '95. Thore is i subscription list bo ing circulated horo to raise funds to build a good school house. We think this is ono thing that should be pushed forward vigorously, as neither teacher nor pupils can do good work in the present building. The lagging school interest puts the signs of progress as a towi badly out of proportion, so let us all put our shoulder to the educa tional whoel and roll her out of the old fogy ruts and advance to a higher plane. By the way there is one other suggestion right here, beforo Lib erty and Pickens get too quiet on the matter of new roads. There should be a few more amendments to some of our roads, viz: From here to Pickens a few very impor tant chiangos could be easily made that would not only shorten the distance but shun much mud and at the same timo get a much bot ter grade. If these are not suffi cient advantages to command somo attention. we will retire. Another is the much-talked-of change from the bridge across Golden's Creek on the Pickens road to Champ's Cabin in Crow Creek or Pea Ridge soction. I notice no account in the paper of a serious firo which destroyed W. 1. Sanders' barn on the n ight of Jan. 16th. All his corn and over 100 gallons of syrup, besides much olso was destroved. The fire was undoubtedly of incendiary origin. The other night just after mid night M. A. Boggs' houso caught on fire ini a closet, in his bed room I ut wats fortunately discovered by his wife waking beforo it burned through and tha timely applica tion of water saved the building. The origin of the fire is unknown, but as it was burning in a basket. whoro thero was some1 boxes of matches it is supposed that some of the rat tribo struck a match. A Peeniar story About the World's Fair. The annals of "things that go astray" contain no parallel to the case whicho, appropriately enough, roaches us from the United States, says the Grimisby (England) Express. -It appears that eighteen months ago the Spanish government sent for an exhibition at the Chicago world's fair a priceless col leetion of objects connected with Columbus and the memorable voyage of discovery which first placed the new world upon the map. IBut the collec tion never reached the exhibition authorities, and it is not the least as tounding detail of an astounding story that this exhibit of surpassing inter est was never missed. All through the summer no one asked inconvenient questions about the iss ig cuiiosi ties, and in due time the world's fair closed. A fortnight ago a United States war ship arrived at Cadiz to return the rest of the exhibits. Then the outcry arose: Where was the Columbus eel lection? No one know anything about the matter on beard the vessel, there fore warm expostulatlons were ad dressed to the United States authorities at Washington by the Madrid foreign office. The affair of the missing an tiquities was wvell on tho way towaird causing an international imisundler standing when, Eureka! the precioue ease of objects camne to light in a bondcd warehouse, where they had been carefully stowed away' not only from dust and damp, but alIso from the eyes of the millions who went to Chii cago last year and to whom they would have p~roved one of the most Interesting features of the show. That such a blunder could have been possible east a flood of light upon the chaos and dis order wvhich reigned supreme by the shores of Lakeo Calunmet during last summer. TERRAPINS AS PgTS. Baeiny Tamed and May ile Taught to Do Certain Tricks. The latest fad in the way of domes tie pets is the diamond-backed terra Pins. They can be found now in artists' studios, men's smoking-rooms, and even in the ladies' boudoirs, says the New York World. The terrapin is ai most convenient pet so far as feeding him is concerned. You can train him to eat alnost any thing in the way of meat, or if you do not give him anything to eat at all for a year or so it does not appear to dis tress him to any great degree. It only increases ia wvakefulness and activity. At first lie will only feed in water, and will eat nothing but hard or soft shell crabs and clams, lie is especially fond of the former. After a time, however, as lie becomes more domesticated, he wvill readily devour cooked beef or mut ton chopped up fine, and wvill learn to takce it out of your hand. WVhen first intr-oduced into the domni cIfle the diamond-back Is very restless. lie seems to want to investigate every possible corner of the house. Bhut as soon as lhe has takcen the bearings of his quarters lie subsides into a condi tion of quiet content and will allow you to try to teach him tricks. Everybody who possesses a diamond-back speaks of the readiness with which they can be tamed. A well-known Now Yorker declares that he has succeeded in teaching his trrapin to do the danse du ventre.
