r Tage No. 2 PRINCE AND UNCLE JERE This Week's Chapter is Furnished by Mr. Prince V*ear Editorr:? Will you be so kind as to grant me this short space in The Herald, not to, reply to Senator Smith; but to make] -one simple request of him. The reader j ordinarily would suppose that we have j had a general falling; out, but not so,] r.4 ?'11 ?./wx/l T Uoxta fnr* >*C CI IV Mill 11 icimn. i iiut^ i,uv much respect for his gray hairs to differ with him in a personal way. We differ only in political matters. If j?ome misfortune was to befall the; stged Senator, 1 would only be too glad to render him such assistance as 3 wins able. He seems to want to keep nagging at me and that in slang terms. This is not only in evidence in his reply to j Mr. Carter, but in every articlp which 'he has written, and for this reason I respectfully ask him not to use my ,-nann? anymore through the press vttnle he attempts to reply to articles written by other parties. Thi.< is not only cowardice, but is very unstatesman-like. 1 know the ' Steratter does not mean to do this. T meant only to explain the bridge proposition and tried to stick to this subject. This truth seemed to cut too close to the Senator when he switched off urn our records. The truth is I want the "voters of Horry to know more of my record while in Columbia and if the Senator prefers to do so and will write the first, article on our records and will stand four square on the sub-j ject, I will be glad to discuss it. with 'him, and when we have done this the tax payer will know who has been his friend. It must make a fellow feel highly exalted to he called a Senator, because I know several Senators who vtterly -'disregard the actions of their House members. This is one cause for so *nany tree conferences. The senate; wants high taxes, while the House will not statu! for it. The twelve i*.ill \iftate levy is now reduced to six miPs. I never could understand why any Representative or Senator would allow himself to be led around with a rin^ in his nose by his political enejmies. Respectfully, W. A. PRINCE. ; O His many friends in M.irion will be Sglad to hear that Prof. C. B. Seaborn Tins been reelected to the High School Faculty and will be here in the fall to : again take up his work as teacher and football coach. He expects great things from the 1023 "Foxes" and will receive the undivided support of the community. Prof. Seaborn, by the Twuy, will not play baseball in Tennessee this summer, but will serve as manager for the Myrtle Beach Yacht ^'Club at Myrtle Be^ch.?Marion Star. t o ' t MAPLE LOCALS :.j. v __?___ \Ivs W Xk' TnrnflM vvllrt line lionn spending some time in this section 'with friends and relatives, left last wvee'k for her home in Georgetown. There are three features of special interest?the County Council of Farm Women; the Mea! Planning Campaign; and the County Short Course. On the 5th of May at 9:00 A. M., Mrs. Plowden is to be in the Home Demonstration Agents' office in the 'Court house to organize a County -Council of Farm Women. This Council is to be composed of the women in the Home Demonstration Community and iWomen's Clubs. The boxes used in the recent election held for the purpose of determining- the place r.s between Star Bluff and Bellamy's Landing, are at the supervisor's office and will not be opened linti! the board imets on next Tuesd.v*'. The votes aa reported appear to be two ways (un? official) by one of v/rrVh ways one i place lvvs it by three votes and by the ! other way the other place has it by j one single vote majority. Some question has come up as to ! the tax receipts that are required in order to vote in this election, and a protest may result in throwing* the 1 xt~?k: ...:n l. ~ ejection tint. iuiuit:i win uc known about the matter until after the board meets next week. BREAKSGROUND FOR BUILDING The ground has been broken on the corner of Laurel street and Fourth avenue for the erection of brick stalls for A. C. Thompson. It is said that the horse and vehicle business will be moved to this new location as soon as the new buildings are finished. At the present time the livestock business is carried on in a brick building on the other side of the avenue. This will be changed into a warehouse to be run on the independent plan as soon as the livestock business has been moved to the new quarters. For the last several weeks the work of tearing down the old building that stood on the corner of Laurel street and Fourth avenue has been completed. also the work of tearing up the brick wall that surrounded the property. Ore practice that town officers want to stop is that of driving over the hose line when the hose is run out to cet to a fire. The machines run at full speed over the hose lines mid it is snid that this has caused damage and will cause more if the habit is not stopped. Last week found many neighbor-1 hoods in this county in need of a fcood j wetting rain to assist the young to-! bacco plants to live. Watering by j hand was resorted to in many c.ises. BANK ALLOWED TO LIQUIDATE An order was signed by Hon. W. H. Town send and the same was filed here last week to the effect that the Bank of Loris will be allowed to liquidate its affairs under the direction of the State bank examiner. Early in March, under a resolution of the board of directors this bank was closed /jnd the matter of liquidating its affairs was taken up with the State bank examiner. A petition was filed in the court and the order now on fi'e is the result. Following the close of the bank an examination of its affairs was mad^ by the examiner. He found that the bflnk had sustained losses. Tt is said that at an early date steps will be taken to turn its affairs into monev end pav off the creditors ^ut of this and wind up its affairs finally. o the Quinine That Dots Not Affect the Head B-cvuse of it* tonic aod laxative effect, LAX A* Ti"K BROMOQUININK is letter than or<liu*r> j'n.ne nnd cioos not cau?e n-rvousn") inline in luavl. - ? ? m'I *** * ?? <0 ! Taggett, as trustee and receiver of the Liberty Starters Corporation, to strike out certain portions Of th? answer of George J. Hollid&y, who was sued by the plaintiff Taggett on a subscription for some of the stock in the corporation. In answer it was alleged that fraudulent representations had been made to procure a sale of the stock, and that the company had never complied with the laws of South Carolina regarding the offering of their stock for sale in this State, which defendant did not know at the time he was induced to agree to take this stock. Judge Townsend took the matter under advisement and last week filed his order in the matter reading as follows: STATE OF SOUTHCAROLINA, UUUNTl Ur HUKKY. Court of Common Pleas. Order requiring answer to he made more definite and Certain. Frederick S. Taggett as Trustee and Receiver, etc., plaintiff, against Geo. J. Holliday, Defendant. In order that the receiver may defeat the defense that the subscription sued on was obtained by fraudulent misrepresentation (Cumberland Co.-Op Bakeries Co., vs. Lawson?W. Va., -:112 S. E. 568) he must show that the subscriber is estopped by conduct, laches or otherwise from interposing such defense as against the creditor for whose benefit this action is brought. Steel vs. Singletary, 118 S. C. 110 S. E. 833. The allegations of the 3rd and 4th paragraphs of the third defense are relevant under Act No. 160 of our General Assembly, 29th. Statutes 251, approved 25th March, 1915, to prevent fraud in the sale and disposition of stock, etc. For these reasons the motion to strike out the portions of the answer noticed, is refuse'-1. Tt is. however, ordered: That the defendant within 20 days from date of this order make the allegations of Paragraph 2 of the second defense. and paragraph 2 of the third defense, and paragraph 3 of the third defense, more definite and certain by alleging therein: What representation were made to defendant, which were false and fraudulent; by whom or what agent or agents such representations were made; and in what particulars they were false or fraudulently made, and when the alleged frauds were discovered by defendant. In all other respects the motion to make the answer r. ore definite or certain is refused. W. H. TOWNSEND. Presiding Judge. April 23rd, 1023. STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, | COUNTY OF HORRY. I I. W. L.
