* SHOP WORKER BRINGS SUIT Columbia.?Two interesting: sequelF to tho recent strike of railroad shop,men have come to heads here. One "was the conviction in the Federal court of five strikers from Sumter, each being; given a sentence of sin months in the Atlanta penitentiary and in addition to a fine of $100. The other is the first of a series of suits to be brought by strike breakers, employed in the place of the shopmen who struck, in which they allege breach of contract, in that they were -discharged when the strike was settled. The five convicted strikers begin1 seivice of their .sentences yeste?.dav They are C. D. Witberspo,11, J. P Butler, Richard F. Cleajjpr, . C'ollic Hinson and M. B. Hinson. They were found guilty of contempt of court, ir that they violated the order of Judge H. A. M. Smith, during the strike against disorders. It took specia permission from Attorney Genera Llaugherty, at Washington, tor Judge Smith to send the men to the AtlanU penitentiary, the rule being that nc prisoner can be sent to that prisor who bave sentences for less than a year and a day, unless special author" ity is granted. Ordinarily the mer would have been sent to some count} jail. The first of the strike breakers .suits has been brought by L. P. Roberts, of Columbia, who has filed complaint against the Seaboard Railway for $1,000 actual damages and $25,000 punitive damages, on the ground of alleged breach of contract claims that he was employed wher the shopmen struck, as a shop workei in the Seaboard yards at Cayce, ir 1/exington County, just across the Congaree river from Columbia. The complaint sets out that when the shopmen struck last July the Seaboard Railway advertised for machinists and other workmen, promising permanent positions to those whe accepted, the complaint alleges. The plaintiff contends that he renderec competent service but was "wanton ly" discharged, as the result of an alleged "conspiracy' between the company and its former employees. Tho program was very simple but appropriate, consisting of : patriotic choruses, ,songs and decla; mations by the school girls and boys " and an address by Mr. Wright, of 1 Conway. Mr. Wright's address was forceful 5 v.nd opportune. He very cleverly de" fined patriotism and called attention to the spirit of lawlessness that fnaws 1 at the very vitals of our national government and emphasized that every patriot's duty is to fight for ? ii i i: l 1 I ?.. He expressed the opinion that no general settlement of the reparations problems was possible unless the question of the interallied debts was solved at the same time. "France is not imperialistic," he declared. "I can say that she is the 1 least imperialistic of the nations, but 5 she has rights to defend. We do not ; contemplate any personal action be? fore the Brussels conference, but if ? we do not obtain satisfaction there is " nothing in the world that can prevent ? us from acting alone in the fullness 1 of our rights." > "There is not one Frenchman who 1 doubts the solidarity of France, and L' no foreigner has the right to doubt - it," Premier Poincare declared. WOODWARD 10-19 11 9 GROWERS ARE CELEBRATING A single check for $1,127,673.06 was received by the Tobacco Co-operative Association last week on account of sales of redried tobacco from the South Carolina belt made to R. J. Reynolds Company. All of this money was turned loose in South Carolina and border North Carolina markets along with some nroopeds from other sales of South Carolina tobacco in the second advance to member tobacco growers on Monday, November 13th. Mass meetings of tobacco growers in celebration of this second payment in the South Carolina belt were held at Kingstree, Florence, Conway, Mullins and Cowards. Treasurer J. H. Craig and Executive Manager Sands addressed the growers and told them how their organization was handling tobacco in a business-like manner to the advantage of the growers. Members in South Carolina had been told that they would never get any more than their first advance but with the second payment already made and I the statement that there was more to come, the South Carolina growers are feeling much better. They are also reported to be much less ready to believe any of the wild rumors started by enemies of the Association. At the coming meeting of the board of directors, which will be held an Raleigh next week, arrangements are to be made for a second payment l :n Eastern North Carolina and a de-| finite date for the payment will probably be set. o ..
