SEVERAL DEAD BY OLD FARRIS Taylor Family Nearly Wiped Out by The Acts of a Crazy Man SUPPLY OF GUN SHELLS Community is Incensed at the Act of Farris?No Lynching Talk On the afternoon of September 6th, following a quarrel among the children of the Taylor and Ferris families, living on opposite sides o) the street, at Clover, a mill village, about ten miles from York, S. C., old man Ferris got his shot gun ana proceeded to shoot up the entire Taylor family by tiring into them as he stood on his own porch. Several members of the Taylor family were rushed to the hospital at Gastonia, N. C., in an effort to save their lives. It was an awful affair and wa. a shock to that entire section of South Carolina. A news dispatch from York, S. C., dated last Thursday, following up the enactment of this desperate I deed, sfcys: "Fighting Bill" Ferris' total of victims in his slaughter of the Taylor family at Clover, ten miles north of here yesterday afternoon, reached three this morning when Miss Lela Taylor, sixteen, died in a Gastonia, N. C., hispital. Her brother, Newton, the second victim, died on the operating table about 7 o'clock last night. It was reported at the hospital tonight that Fred Taylor, twentytwo, had a fighting chance for recovery. Little Dolly Taylor, ten, is only slightly wounded, having been shot in her arm. Miss Gertrude Taylor was returned home from the hospital today. The bodies of Clause Johnson, twenty, a cousin of the Taylors, who was killed instantly when Ferris opened fire on the Taylor home yesterday, and his two cousins were buried this afternoon. \ At the inquest this morning verdict was returned holding Karris responsible for the death of the trio. Tom Perry, star eye-witness to the tragedy, said that he and Far ris opened one of the shells, of which Farris had an abundant supply on Sunday, and counted fifteen buckshot in it. Friends of Farris were busy at York and Clover today spre^im^ propaganda, seeking to create the impression that the man was crazy at the time of the shooting. While Clover people arc naturally incensed over the crime there Una oeen nine or no talk of lynching, and it is felt that Farris would be as safe in the county Jail as in tlie penitentiary. ! Farris has been marned three times and has children by each marriage. His older children, v ho live at Clover and Sharon, are regarded as good citizens. SURPRISE CONTESTS IMPROVE QUALITY OF MILK DELIVERED Surprise milk contests?contests in which the milk sold by various dealers in a city is compared by taking samples occasionally without warning?have been very effective in improving the milk supply of many cities. Contests of this kind carried out with the assistance of the United States Department of Agriculture have shown remarkable results in a number of western cities. The bacterial counts and the total milk scores for the cities were made up ! from the results of tests of samples from each of the delivery systems. In Long Beach, Calif., the average ( bacterial count in the first contest was 118,288; in the last contest it was down to 11,823. In the first the average score of the milk sold there was 71.56, and in the last it Jl was up to 90.67. The milk sold in | Riverside, Calif., improved in bacterial count from 101,500 to 8,522, and rose in score from 82.93 to 93.63. Los Angeles dealers, as a result of these surprise contests, made great improvement in the quality of the milk supply, bringing down the count from 84,1(39 to 12,690 and raising the score from 80.60 to 91.65. The figures for Portland, Ore., changed from 148,490 to 13,970, and from 76.19 to 92.52. The number of bacteria in a cubic centimeter of Seattle milk was brought from 64,124 down to 31,297, and the | score was lifted from 80.50 to 88.24 A milk dealer does not like to be surprised with dirty milk on his wagons, especially when the results = of the tests are to be published i;i the local papers.
