It is true that a perfectly clean piece of land is not necessary, w h?it it must not be extremely wet at m all times, nor must it be too poor in , w plant food. These are but illustrations from the July reports of the agents, many others having reported similarly. W. D. Wood, Union.?During this month over thirty pure-bred hogs have been placed among the farmers oi mis county. A numberr of forage crop demonstrations for hogs will oe carried out this fall. i A. B. Garwile, McCormick.?Farmers in this county seem to be turning to poultry faster than to anything since the coming of the boll weevil. I get more calls for this work right now than for any other. Mr. Mehrhof and I have gotten some good work started along this line. This fall several farmers of the county will he shipping eggs. Through the aid of Messrs, Sheely and Herman 1 am able to get some good work started with the beef cattle men and hog growers on pastune lines and feeding demonstrations. Mr. Sheely and 1 visited a number of farmers to look over their pastures and herds. This fall Mr. Jeffords will come in to further aid in pasture and forage crop work. Gus York. Many farmers who were not in a position to grow truck and who have not planted any cotton are in dire need of some cash item, and 1 believe in many instances hogs will fill this need. Snow is regarded as the great enemy of rail transportation, and information furnished by the snow reports of the Weather Bureau helps to forewarn the railroads as to districts where windbreaks or snowsheds should he erected or snowplows made readv. Heavy rains bring about floods j which wash away bridges, underI mine roadbeds, and cause landslides. ! Not all these disasters can be averted, but when predictions can be made in time, steps may be taken to lessen the damage by strengthening critical points. Ice storms and thunderstorms often put electrified lines out of order. High winds will sometimes derail trains. Snow and sand, impelled by strong winds, often pile upon the tracks and delay transportation. Heavy rainfall produces luxurious vegetation, which is a great nuisance on earth-ballasted roads, while any excessive moisture shortens the life of ties and other woodwork. Weather effects not only the railroad tracks and rolling stock but also the goods transported. This is especially true of perishable foods. In addition to pre-cooling and icinu* stations whit-h uro mnin. tained, refrigerator and heater cars are used, and a close watch kept on Weather Bureau announcements in the districts where perishables must be moved. Sensational developments involving a prominent New Orleans man and woman in connection with the so-called "poison letters," several of which are alleged to have been mailed to Atlanta from New Orleans rerecently, are promised witlrn thenext few days.
