. ANNUAL SUPPER I GREAT SUCCESS Not One Note of Pessimism is Sounded at Meeting of Chamber. SUPPER IS SERVED r* \ # ^ *4 * | " bY UIVIU LEAGUE Paper by F. A. Burroughs on Conway's Need for New Industries. Not a note of pessimism was sounded at the annual New Years dinner of the Conway Chamber of Commerce on Friday evening January . Despite all taik. of hard times and depression the tone of this meeting was spirited, enthusiastic, optimistic, with a confidence that augurs well for the future. Some ten or more business men of the town made short addresses in which they outlined a program of activities to be undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce during: the year 1922. From the spirit of thos^ present it is safe to say that main of the deals proclaimed at this meeting will reach a material realization before twelve months have passed. The very fact of the continued existence and growth of the Chamber of Commerce is in itself a most wholesome sign. At various times in past years the town has organized Chambers of Commerce but they were short lived. The mortality statistics of Conway Chambers of Commerce were rather discouraging. Two years ago Mayor L. I). Magrath undertook to have a Chamber organized on a basis that would insure accomplishment. The business men of the town responded readily and the present Chamber was orirani:?ed. It has nlwavs boon a jroinfi; concern ar.d has a record of achievements which have amply justified its existence. The meeting on Fndav nio-ht wa^ more prophetic than historic. After a brief review of the important place hold by the chicken in agriculture, literature, history, mythology, and religion, Mr. Burroughs explained that his committee had organized the Horry Poultry Association and was receiving expert advice on plans and methods. He reported that the Burroughs Bank and Trust Co. had agreed to lend the sum of $1000 to members of the association to be invested in pure bred poultry. A feature of the evening was a carefully prepared paper by Mr. F. A. Burroughs on Conway's need for now industries. Mr. Burroughs pointed out that with the present outlook for cotton and tobacco it was imperative that consideration be given to the organization of needed industries. The presence of manufacturing plants in the community, he said, has a stabilizing effect on business and tends to relieve the emergency caused by failing prices and difficulty of production of agricultural products. At appropriate intervals during itho program L. D. Magrath and John IE. Watson gave a series of musical | selections. These had to do with local personalities and proved highly entertaining. I HORRY COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION HOLDS MKimNO .J?2D ani > J The Horry ~CoimTy~ Bill' Association in sessi >n ?lie tenth of January pro posed the endorsement of a much discussed county court for Horry county. For a lonj? time the memI mn if the Hor. 0?, well :?izens of the Independent Republic, have felt a great need for some moans of relieving the much congested condition of the docket of our count v. The courts which are nrovid od for and which are held have proven inadequate to handle tho great volume of business which is put into litigation. In many instances cases remain on docket for several yeears. As a result of this many litigants lose their rights ami the consequental loss of money. For several years the peeople of the county have discussed a county court which would take care of the vast majority of this business and would expedite business. In keeping with this desire to promote justice, the Bar Association has a?sinv>sd tbr initiative .and will propose plans for such a court to the legislature which is now in session. Messrs. Nortor, Page and McMillan were appointed as a committee to draw up plans to be submitted to the delegation at Columbia. The neoplp of Hovrv recognized the unquestioned ability of their judge, S. W. G. Shipp, and have learned to lov? and nd" i vThe Bar Association, feeling that they were expressing the will of [practically every Horryite, unanimously went on record as favoring the election of this, the judge of our circuit. as a proper and capable man for the position of Justice o" the Supreme Court. I know the ! o vl would come a^ soon as I learned that the legislature in 1920 raised the state appropriation from threee million to more than six million dollars. Also the salaries of our county officers were almost doubled. The Horrv deleara tion put the two hundred thousand dol'vv rond bond ovpj* ui\ 'iNo nearly every school district voted an extra tax levy. "My taxes ;ire loo high," is the slogan now; also we hear the cry,! "lit.tier reads and schools." Th."* delegation does not have the power to cut out any of the bonded indebtedness, neither the levies for [school purposes, and still 1 am going to the legislature to voto against (every unnecessary appropriation, both in the state and county. I am very certain that we will reduce the state levy, and also the county levy, unless we do extensive bridge building. It is no time now to levy heavier burdens upon the tax payers. This 1 shall oppose. I |have recently learned that we have about two hundred thousand dollars less of personal property on the tax i hnn'cs than In 1020.
