4 I I CONWAY LIKELY TO GET PLANT ?? Breslauer, Lachicotte & Co. j>.- Contemplate Canning Factory Here. | APPOINT COMWiTTTEE TO VISIT COMPANY Will Employ Labor and Make Market for Vegetables in This Section There is ;i possibility that a canning factory, operated by Messrs. Breslauer, Lachicotte & Co., may be erected at Conway. This firm lvis been in the canning business for a number of years and has established a ready market for its goods. The plant which they now operate is located at Waverly Mills, S. C. Under date of November 1 Messrs. Breslauer, Lachicotte & Co. wrote the following letter to Mayor L. D. Mag-rath : "We are lookintr around with n viow of locating one 01* more canning factories for the packing of vegetables, preferably okra, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. An enterprise of this kind would employ a considerable amount of labor, mostly women in preparing and packing the vegetables in llm factory; and farm 'ahor in producing the necessary vegetables. "We would like to know if your city ? would welcome an enterprise of this kind and what inducements you have to offer to secure same. We would like to know if there is ample labor t.<> handle both the factory and the producing ends; if your farmers would guarantee an acreage of vegetables sufficient to support such an establishment; if your business men and farmers would take stock in the enterprise. It will require about say ^0(1 to <100 acres to be planted in tomatoes and 100 to lf>0 acres to be planted in okra. Other lines of vegetables might follow." Mayor Magrath called the matter to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce and that organization decided to send a committee to Waverly Mills to confer wi*h the managers of the plant there. The secretary of the Chamber of Commerce has written f a IVTnocMv Hrne. Lilt: luiiuwiii^ icnni iw luvooi n? A/4V?7 leuer, Lachicotte & Co.: "Your letter of November 1 addressed to the Mayor of Conway hr been referred to the Chamber of Commerce foi' attention. " \ matter of this sort, the locatior c of a canning plant, involves so many elet:?i!s that it would he impracticable to review them in a letter. I will only say that this community would welcome a plant of the kind you propose to erect and would lend it all reasonable support. "In order that we may properly understand each other and as an evi donee of our interest,, the Chamber ol Commerce has appointed a committee to confer with you in regard to the project. This committee consisting e>f Mr. W. O. Davis, Mr. J. E. Bryan Mr. F. A. Burroughs, Mr. I). M. Bur routrhs and Mayor L. D. Maicrath will be at Waverly Mills e>n Wednes elay, November (J, at about 10:30 foi the purpose of an interview with you At that time we may canvass the en lire situation .and reach some kind ol an understanding." LAND SHOWING h A REDUCTION Sheriff and Clerk Sell Various Tracts at Court House Door. t < Last- Monday was legal salesday at 1 Conway. A number of tracts of land i changed hands under the hammer I under notices of sale published by the > sheriff of the county and the clerk of S the court. c The lands sold brought remarkably j lower price:- than one year ago and ' it is doubtless because some people ^ are short of cash or find it hard to s borrow money with which to pay for c land. It is temporarily down in price, b'|< it is helievrd that before long it ' will go up again. 11 A tract of seventy acre* in Simp- n son Creek township, the property of .1. A. Several other small tracts of land in the county at different places changed hands at comparatively low ! orices, but all of these were under 1 r the foreclosure of mortgages where , the holders of the mortgages had to r buy the Land in for self-protection. i o __ , : HYMAN'S RIG ; BREAD WINDOW r * The beautiful display of cakes and * other products of the Ilyman bakery C shown in the display window at Hy, man's grocery store yesterday morn ing brought many expressions of ad, miration from passers-by. The store really deserves credit for this nice arrangement of the articles, . both tasty and substantial, now being - turned out in largo quantities at the T bakery. The bakery is operated under approved management and is a credit not only to the owners of the bakery but tho entire town should be proud of tho establishment.
