i i * | \ ANSWERS ABOUT SCHOOL MATTERS Questions Were Asked in Article Recently Published <n the Herald. . My attention was called to an article in the Herald under date of October 20. In this article the editor asks several questions pertaining to local school matters which I think should be answered in order t^at ^he citizens of School District .,^0.^19 may see the situation in its true light. The Editor asked as to the number of pupils attending the Burroughs school from outside the district, apparently having the impression that crowded conditions are due to this Cause This. Vtnwovpr iu nnf on I Some three weeks ago I took a census of the entire school and found that thirty-foui pupils from outside the district were enrolled in the first seven grades, which are taught by nine tenchers. Sis outside pupils were the greatest number in any one room. From this statement it is obvious that no extvn com is attached to the taxpayers ol this district for permitting a limited number of pupils to come from other districts. I might say that the number of outside pupils is limited by the enrollment of a grade. As you are doubtless aware, the pupils under one teacher are limited by state laws to fifty, so that when the enrollment passes forty, no outside pupils are allowed to enter that particular grade. At this time practically every room is clof-ed to outside pupils. I have already denied entrance to at least twenty-five non-resident pupils. In the high school department there are twenty-two students from other districts, a much higher percentage than in the grammar grades. This of course, i? due to the limited number of adecj'.vte schools in the county. This condition o.Ims throughout *he state i ml is eneouiaged by state laws to the extent that the state pays this school and all others ir3 per month per pupil. I ast year Mr. Swearinger paid this district approximately $400 t<>1 the high school pupns that cuing to i a from other districts. As to the question of cost to an outside pupil 1 will say th.it it is the same as foi .a pupil residing* within .the district. Booth of Medical Corps.) November 1. Stationed at St. Gorgoune for the past nine days. We left on this day at 3 P. M. for next point and hiked twenty kilometers. Arrived at#Chatel at 11 A. M. and camped out in woods near station to take train next morning* Rained all night and was cold. On November 2 we took a train at 8 P. M. and arrived at Sampigny at 3 P. M. and waited a while for hardtack and cdffee. Iieft this place and hiked fifteen kilometers to Dompcebrian. Arrived at midnight and got whatever shelter we could that was not torn up to sleep under. On November 3 we rested until noon, then fell in and hiked twenty-three kilometers. Battalion got lost and camped till next day on a mountain. Arrived at 7:20 P. M. on November 4. Got lunch consisting of hardtack and coflfee at 10 P. M. and fell in ,ind hiked three kilometers down the mountain to French rest camp, sixtyone kilometers from Bpches. November 5 we rested and fell in at dark and hiked twelve kilometers to Camp Ileunis, arriving at 10 P. M. On No veruber (> wc rested expecting to advance on November 7, salvaging* all but what is necessary to have for .1 drive on Boches. On November 8 we were ready and on November 9 at 3 A. M. we fell in for an advance. The '}.r>th Artillery was in action for us to advance under and at 9 A. M. we were under shell fire from Boches. On November 10 eleven Boche prisoners were taken and a few Americans received wounds. On November 11 we took three towns and advanced against resistance five and one-half kilometers. Several were killed and nearly thirty wounded. Last town was Mauheulles iear Verdun. The weather was cold,' oggy and cloudy and fog saved a '."cat many. Gas kilied several. At !Q A. INI. we heard the war would ease. but kept on with our wounded. \t 11 A. M. we were all glad it had oa* ed. T'^is was Mouse Sect or. Among: the cases tried in the court last week that of Loris Grocery Co. vs. Johri Ropers. The defendant was not present and the case was tried in his absence. It resulted in a verdict against him for the sum of $252.11. This was an action on a back account on which .the balance was claimed as above stated. Defendant answered and elleged that some of the goods purchased were unsound and ' rotten. ? No witnesses were sworn for the defense. Under these circumstances the court directed a verdict for the plaintiff for the full amount claimed. HASVISITORS FROM ENGLAND Mr. and Mrs. Officer Spending Several Weeks With Geo. Officer. William Officer, and his sister, Miss Eliza Officer, both of Manchester, England, are visiting their brother, George Officer, and his family, here. They will remain in Conway ,'for about three weeks before starting the long trip back home. William Officer resides in Manchester, England, in what is known as the cotton manufacturing district, and his business is thut of a broker of the cotton cloth produced in great quantities by the cotton mills located in that city. He is a member of the Manchester Royal Exchange, the largest exchange in the world. In th<j past this exchange has been enlarged several times owing to the growth of its business the need of added facilities to attend to it.
