Sarah Knox killed my wife and tha' the reason she did it was because she was jealous of her," was the statement that Roj*er D. Eastlake, petty naval officer, made at police headquarters this evening, following; his arrival from Fredericksburg, with the nurse, who is accused jointly with him of the murder of E:ist lake's wife at Colonial Beach last week Friday. | Easilake made the statement in answer to questions of Bertillion Expert Toler and in the presence of several police officers and newspapermen. Eastlake and Miss Knox arrived in Richmond at 3 o'clock in the afternoon in cliarge of Sergeant Toler, who had been sent to Fredericksburg by order of Governor Westmoreland Davis, and Sergeant W. Thomas Hall, of the Colonial Bench police, who arrested the pair when the murder of Mrs. Eastlake was discovered. They were forced to wait at the union station about twenty minutes for the patrol wagon and the presence of such a large number of reporters and photographers attracted the attention of those lounging about the station. A crowd of at least 200 at once gathered around and while the couple made no effort to avoid the gaze of the curious, both strenuously objected to being photographed. EastJake said he would not mind having his p'cture taken after he had been shaved. The womr.n gave no reason ' for her aversion to being photographed. I UP C I are jl inde Eastlake made no effort to evade con versation bearing on the crime, al though denying that he had any personal knowledge of the deed, but Mis Knox, while alluding to it now an'' then, was a little more reticent, al though admitting that she "thought the police had a strong ca^c .against hev," because of the circumstantial evidence which had bean uncovered. She stoutly maintained her innocence, however. On* Finger Vmnutatod. Finger prints of both East'ake and Miss Knox wore at once taken and revealed that the lert toretmger ot Miss Knox's hand had been amputated. Both were photographed for the police nailery, and the nurse did her best to prevent tho police photographer from getting a good likeness of her. twisting and turning her head while sho sat in the chair, until it was finally made plain to her that she would have to "stop fooling" if she wished to he treated with consideration Roth were taken to the second police station, after the "third degree" had been administered and, later in the night, Chief of Police Charles A. Sherry ordered them committed to the city jail. It was a cruel grilling that Sergeant Toler gave East'ake. The authorities at Colonial Reach .and Fredericksburg, it is said, had made little or no effort to wring confessions from either, contenting themselves with gathering evidence upon which to base their case. It was different, however, after they arrived in Richmor*l. and neither made any effort to conceal their fright, the woman, though, bearing up far better th.an the man. In Pitiable Condition. Eastlake was in pitiable condition when lie emerged from the room in which he had been grilled by Serjeant To lor, his knees steering and his voice trembling1 appealinglv when ho was able to speak at all. "She was head over heels in love with me and 1 was married and that made hei jealous of my wife, 1 suppose." As a matter of fact. Eastlake, don't you know that this knox woman killed your wife and that you were present when the deed was done?" "The murder was committed, all right, and I think the Knox woman killed my wife," the former navy man responded, "but 1 have no personal knowledge of who did it." "Were you in love with Miss Knox ?" asked Sergeant Toler. "No sir," said Eastlake. "I was in love wiih my wife, and 1 had been trying to got rid of her ever since last June. But she hounded me. She threatened me with exposure. 1 owed her .$550 and my wife owed her .SI00.
