N. J. Stevens, Supt. PHM IPPINE LEECHES Scientist Describes His First Experience With Them. Tieecbes are a feature of the Phil ippine forests not met with in lh" American tropics. Writing from M jinila to the Smithsonian Tnstitu i tion. Dr. A. S. Hitchco^l describe* his first experience with them, a^ encountered in a climb from the Agricultural College at Los Banos through the virgin forest to the top of Mrtkiling, 3,300 feet high. The leeches are slendei;, worm-like crea-1 tures ns much as two inches long. They swarm in countless numbers on | the trail, while many crawl on the bushes, and they not enly take hold whenever touched, but if a person stands still they crawl toward him from all directions. They attach themselves to the skin, suck their fill of blood then drop off. Tight wool i puttees were worn to protect the legs, but Dr. Hitchcock's shoes were sewed up only about two-thirds of the way to the top, and they gave entrance below the puttess. 9 leech was on one foot when the top of the mountain was reached. Coming down, as many as nine had worked their way in, and they were crushed j into a disgusting mixture of blood md leeehes. n | Chickens in transit seldom become too cold. It is heat that must be avoided. Change of Trade. Some years ago a cotton man In- ! quired at a large bank regarding bis ; which the hank hehl for a sizable amount. "Yes." remarked an officer, "it falls due totnonow. and we expect It will he paid." The cotton man made no reply for a moment, then asked abruptly, "What is your business?" "Why, I am a banker." was the surprised response. "Well," mused the cotton man. SPEED MANIAC S ARE PUNISHED | Citizen Holds up Recent Incident on Ijighway as an Example What came near being: a fatal acci dent to eight young men and women on the highway between Conway and Homewood last Saturday night, is only another reminder of what is liable to happen to any of us at any time we venture for a ride on the highway where speed maniacs are allowed to have unrestrained privileges. This particular accident resulted \^ the demolishing of a Buick loadstei containing three voumr men point? to Florence from Myrtle Beach; the young man driving being crazy drunk with whiskey. This car ran into a Ford touring car containing several young men and women coming to Cm way. The Ford car was a's > demolished, but fortuately no one was hurt in either car, and it seems that only by a mnacle all were not killed. It is said that the Buick car was making a speed of 50 miles per hour when it struck the Ford car. Tlv4 highwav at thin point was good and very wide. The news of the accident soon spread, and in a short while the sheriff, rural policeman and the town authoiities were en hand, and the men wore arrested and we:e -urn marily dealt with. They p"id for the da nage done to the JYml ear an^ to the Buick car. and a fine was imposed by the Town authorities fo?* speeding through town. Tt i under stood that (he county authorities impo ed a heavy fine of $50' 0, but which was afterwards thouirhi, to he too much, and one-half of it re turned to them t.ofroth< r w'th 'i quantity of whiskey which was fornd ;n their possession and which the-were transporting. Surely, such awful, inhuman and agmizing punishment, as was meted oet to these yorng men of prominent V'vinia families of high socia' stand in.and wealth, will serve as a warning lesson to others who may aspire to venture into the role of speed maniacs; and hereafter th? public highway near Conway " ?"
