TH SPEEDING UP PHOTOGRAPHY Scientist at Work on Camera i to Take 10G.C00 Pictures a Minute Next we shall have movies taken at seventy miles an hour. Instead of photographing at the poky rate of less than three-quarters of a mile an ' hour, which is the speed that is used 1 in filming the dramas and comedies' 1 that you see at llic corner motion pic- 1 turo houses, this summer will see the perfection of a motion picture ma- ! chine that will photograph 100,000 images a minute on ordinary collu- 1 loid film that will race throveh the camera at the speed of the fastest express train, says the New Vovk Eveninn: Post. This is the nrophecv and hope of C. Frvncis .lenVins. Workir.tr in his laboratory in Washington, he ;s mow turning his attention toward the future. The speed at which he aims h:?heen achieved in t"st, and ti e prima pies are those that are used in a c; ^ era that today photographs at tbr ; rate of 18.000 pictures a minute as a regular performanre. If you could visit Mr. Jenkins's lahoratorv and see him project some of j his high-speed films von would savt i "Ob! how slow," not "How fast!" Mr. Jenkins has a movm of a 'itt'le girl .iumning a rope. She has heen honored by beine; photof'v-nh^d m.ore it'oiet: ; second than the higVe-t n* if1 | movie <tween. These (,oniiver',i:t' trie'* j fi'ms are usirilly taken only abouM eiirlit time? as f:is* as the ore*inarv J films, and their makinc does not involve the difficulties and the new principles that Mr. Jenkins has beer , wrestling with for the past few years j And it is not the perfection of| slapstick comcdv that INT! . Jenkins is j working. "The analysis of any high speed I or ouick movement hv photo divisions j of H00 to 1,500 pictures a second ii ! destined to disclose data of great i value to the scientist and engineer,"; explains Mr. Jenkins. He believes that ! this will lie tlie cause in even unsugjested fields. Consider the souashing of a rubbev ball. The camera caught his ingenue movie queen in the act of bouneinir ar air-filled rubber ball. Perhaps th< rubber <'re*-- that will shoe the v'odern auto will be further perfected by : study of the phenomena disclosed by this bounding ball. "Voi. will notice how ihe ball i' ' fla'tencjl contact with t'>e y oinid.''! said Mr. Jenkins, as he shov ed the | la/ily moving ball floating on the project ion s-reon. By Milton Brenner L Herlin. -Beaten <n land and temporarily driven off the sea, the Get mans are convinccd there is a great'future in the air?and that they arc " Koing ti> prepare for it. In the windows of the former urrcal shipping companies arc prominently displayed the time table* of the daily services by airplane between Merlin and the rest of Ger- <' many, with connections for Copen- 1 bagen, lloliand and Rngland. i 1 On the news stand you will fin ' 1 such magazines as "Dor Lultwetr''P ("The Airway") and others, all do- j \oted entirely to aviation topic-. You pass n birr comfortable house Hi' of which soldierly chaps come i sta'king and as1: what place it is. h only to le'.irn that it is the swcl' 1 , Aera Club of Germany, one of a 1 ^ number of such organizations. It makes a point of having le<% < tares an'' expositions on aerial to 'h-ii nical subjects. All former flag offi cors of the German military and naval avation corps are made wel- , come. On every Tuesday there are 1 reunions of such officers. Again, you pass the oftioc of one of *he bii?; German insurance companies and you learn that the principal ones of Germany have formed : n air pool for the purpose of ini.M'i'in; : ' kinds of flying craft npjiius!. loss. The combined camta' of the companies is four hundred million marks. AM of this moans that in spite o " the restrictions the Treaty of Versailles ought to place upon German aircraft plans, the people of this empire are nevertheless making rapi'. strides for supremacy of the air. Only one nation rivals Germany, in the air and that is France. We with out boundless wealth are hopelessly behind the Germans. So I; England. Airplane Facilities At the close of the war Germany J had 48 factories employing 61,390 I men in the construction of airplane.* j and dirigibles. J Under the treaty provisions thes; i factories have been forced to stop J making such things, so they have been converted into plants for making wagons, agricultural implements etc. Nevertheless, the technical direcaviatioe L WI ? > \J 1 ? plants arc still at work and many j still have their scientific bureaus in j operation. Also some firms like Zeppelin. | Albatross, Junker and Fokker are , still io existence as airplane maker.;. The tendency in German aviatioiwork lias been to develop the giar-. aeroplane and seaplane. This is os pecially true (?f three types. Fii'-t: Enlargement of aircraft by increase of power, brought about by multiplication in the number of motors which are arranged in the* wings. Se<ond: Enlargement of aircraft: I by increase of power brought aboiu. J j by multiplication in t.ho number of r ictors which are arranged in the? contra) fu olage or body and design ed to drivo one or more propellers through the medium of shafts or gear'ng. Third: A type displaying rad'ea' departures from precedence in designs and aiming at greater aProum' '.'iTicienry irrespective of the arrangement of motors or power installation. Greater Companies For real active daily flight ?ervic- j the two greatest companies in Ger - i many arc the Duetsche Luft Reedc-y j rel, which is connected in a business j way with the Hamburg-American Steamship Company, and the Sablatnig Luftverkehr, which is connect ed in a business way with the North Ge-wan IJovd Steamship Company. The Deutsche Lufet Reedcrel on Nov. 26, finished its one milliontn kilometer of accomplished flights, or over 25 limes around the earth. At present there is a regular dal lv service which starts at Dresden, through Berlin, Brunswick, Hambrug Dortmund and vice versa. There is also a regular service from Bremen to Amsterdam, connecting with the Dutch service to London. The Sablatnig has a regular daily service from Berlin through Bremen to Jv'iunster. The Lloyd Ostfig runs >1 daily service from Berlin through Danzig to Konigsburg. The Rumpier runs one from Berlin through Leipzig to Munich. The German Luft Lloyd runs a service other from Hamburg and another from Madgeburg to Bres'enu. Then there are a number of smaller runs. o OR. J. A.
