One reason for the universal usage of cotton goods is the wide variety of patterns and qualities available. Their colors, though less "fast" and beautiful than those of fabrics made from animal fibers, are equally numerous. Theiv are so many different cotton fabrics that all tastes and "pocketbooks" can he satisfied. Like silks, when familiarizing oneself with cotton goods, it is well to recognize staples by their main characteristics ami then place the new i ii.?. nntuvallv be goods wnere iuc.\ v v long. Calicoes ? sometimes known as prints, because the design is printed j 011 the woven goods?represent the cheaper line of cottons, made ol* the coarser patterns. They are likely to fade sooner than ginghams or any other finer goods made of better yarns. All calicoes are plain weave. Ginghams are also plain weave cottons*. With one exception, chambray, they are woven in stripes, plaids <?r checks from different colored yarns of good quality. The design is then;fore woven rather than printed, as may be proven by the fact that it is the same on both sides. Chambrays are woven with colored warp and white filling. This produces their characteristic changeable effects. Tissue ginghams arc noticeably soft I and open in their weave. They are woven from loosely twisted yarns. Zephyr ginghams are appreciably light in weight, "zephyr" meaning a light west wind. The Muslin group of cottons is 1.4.. nnnnm>>iiw>fi '1 rul large, vary in (]u<tuty) unw ?...? price from the unbleached domestic muslin to the transparent "dressy" organdy. Long cloth is_a refined form of domestic muslin, because closely woven of finer yarns and given a more careful finish. Cambric is even finer in texture and appearance than long cloth, making it suitable for in- I fants' dresses and substantial lingerie. | It shows a good deal of dressing. Coming to the thin, sheer, delicate muslins, we have thelawns, nainsook, mull and batiste. ..Lawns (Persian, India, and linen) differ accord- ! ing to the finest of yarns, openness of weave and amount of dressing. Mull is soft, because made up without riv^ucincr Nainsook and batiste are very similar. Made of the finest, | lightest, strongest yarns, they are appropriate for babies' clothes, summer dresses, and dainty lingerie. Nainsook is the more closely woven. The finest of both may be either dull or lustrous. Organdy is recognized by its "airy" semi-transparent appearance and fine crisp texture. Dimity has an open texture and cords running lengthwise as stripes or in both directions, forming squares. Percale, a fine smooth finish variety of cambric, is made of specially prepared round, strong threads. Its characteristic design is a printed stripe in colors. iMadras is similar but softer in texture and the design is woven rather than printed. Superior percale is equal to medium quality madras in appearance and wearing quality. Among the one-time novelty cotton fabrics which have become staple are poplin, pique, crepe, voile and gaberI i?? *? ? i: _ c | (line*. I'opnn wovi:ii iiuiii uit'iccn&uu yarns has a high and pleasing luster. It shows also a subdued cord effect, due to a thick filling thread. Pique has a heavier cord effect. Crepe, made of crimped yarns, shows a charI acteristic crinkled surface not lost in laundering. Voile is known l>y its open weave and airy texture due to the hard twisted yarns from which it is formed. ; Gabardines is an exceptional cotton fabric in weave and appearance. It has a thick, soft body produced by soft yarns with the diagonal or serge weave. This makes it an excellent tub skirt or suit material. It is an imitation of wool gaberdine. Denim and galatea are also diagonal or twill weave cotton fabrics of a strong, heavy texture suitable for rough usage. ' r - y * HHff1ffWWTIBIlMMfP 0 < >R JUNE t] 9 NO. 10.
