V TUESDAY ROBERT U IN"THE FOURTE1 I THURSDAY "ADVENTURED Also A C FRIDAY ROY STE "BONDS Ol A i SATURDAY a WESTERN an a fuel-fed furnace may revolutionized the fertilizer industry of the world, j i In the United States the phosphate |l used for fertilizer comes largely from i the deposits of rock in Florida. The i established method of producing a 1 soluble phosphate is to treat the rock i \ with sulphuric acid. By this method 1 the acid phosphate contains only one- ; half the percentage of phosphoric ] acid that is contained in the rock from which it was derived. Com- ; mercial acid phosphate, for instance, made from 32 per cent rock contains only 10 per (font of phosphoric acid. Oftentimes the nrocess result <i in 1I10 loss of two-thirds of the rock. Now Process 'Saves Waste. With a view to saving this immense waste of phosphate, the Bu- I reau of Soils undertook to evolve a | new process whereby phosphoric; could be freed by using a high degree 1 of heat. The first work was done in 1 an electric furnace, but it soon be-1 came evvlont thai this process would be prohibitively expensive except in localities where electric power could be obtained at a very low cost. The j department, therefore, turned its attention to tho possibilities of using; crude ?>ii, winch is the cheapest fuel j obtainable in the vicinity of the large i phosphate rnck deposits in Florida.! and the experiments indicate that phosphoric acid can be extracted'1 more cheaply in an oil-burning fur- , naco than by the old sulphuric acid , j process. j For the purpose of keeping the fuel in direct contact with the rock materia! and for convenience in hand-, ling, the material is briquetted with coke and -sand at the experimental plant at Arlington, Va. By this material the co"ke material is kept within the mass ami is retained unti' the reaction is well started. Sand or siTicsi is necessary to bring about the chemical reactions in this process and it is largely present ?as an im purity in the Florida phosphate deposits, together with a clayey ingredient, which acts as an excellent hinder in making the briquettes. Thus the very impurities which make rock objectionable under ihc old process are turned into an asset. Value of New Development. In the experimental runs at Arlington the practical value of the new development is indicated by the fact that a 64 per cent phosphoric acid was recovered from the rock as ?at GRAHAM'S We are agents for the L is equipped for repairing when things get wrong wit GENERAL RE We ire also nrenared t 1 any other make of car, a business. The difference between a i)U per cent product and a H> per cent product means an immense saving in freight charges. While it. is difficult to estimate with accuracy the actual cost ot the new pre.' ss, H has lioen found that the consumption of fuel was only about 15 per cent of the value of the product, while with the sulphuric acid proce s the co- t ">f the acid used seldom rum below Lli oi cent. o ? . i To Stop a Cough Quick take HAYES* HEALING H'jNEY, a cough medicine, which stops the cough by healing the inilamed and irritated tissues.
