Most of the farmers will use fer- i tilizers. this year but they will not use Hijso as lavishly as they have in the past. It will not be good management 0:1 their part if they do. o Another element of uncertainty in j the minds of the farmers just now is the amount of fertilizer they should use this year. They are advised to use fertilizer as sparingly as possible, and make all the headway they can "with homemade compost. o The wise rule for the farmer to follow this year is to refrain from going in debt for too much fertilizers*. Live as cheap as possible from supplies, made on the farm. Just at this time the town has but three freight trains ner weok. Freight is handled with less care than ever before, it would appear. Machinery is always torn up and broken, and merchants' goods are frequently lobbed. FARMERS UNCERTAIN. Farmers all over this country are a little uncertain as to what to do this year, unless it be a few in Virginia and North Carolina, where it appears that they have definitely decided that they will not plant any tobacco whatever during 191?!?leaving* out the 1021 crop entirely so that the oversupply may be exhausted and make better prices. In other sections of the tobacco growing belt, growers arc getting together as best -they can on a scheme to reduce the acreage to such an extent that the crop this year may be very small. . Kfforts are being made in all of the tobacco growing territory to get the farmers to organize and cut down the acreage one-tliii'd or more. in some section of the tobacco growing .states where the crop is not marketed until about this time of the. year, the farmers are withdrawing their product from the warehouse floors on account of the low prices -and the warehouses arc closing up for (lie season without making any sales. In this section of* South Carolina the same element of uncertainty prevails as to what acreage "should be pi anted to the crops of cotton and tobacco. There is hardly a farmer to be found who can teli you just what jie nas decided to do; that is, if lie is one who has been reading and giving his thoughts to the problems before him. As to cotton the outlook is bad for high prices next fall; and as to cotton the experience of the growers in North Carolina and Virginia is enough to make the Horry county nlnnl.Pi1 oKnnt lumr mncli lir? f Vt* VVy V I I V/ H I I I V? No farmer is advised to leave off either tobacco or cotton entirely. The better way is to plant as sparingly as possible of both crops where the farmer's lands are suitable to both. While cutting down the acreage of tobacco und cotton, let each farmer raise plenty of grain and food crops, for his family and stock and have a surplus of those to sell.
