Singleton was recently sued in the magistrate court here by a colored family named Gagum to recover damages alleged in the complaint on account of the accident some time ago on the race path when the radius rods bf steering gears of Singleton's Ford broke. ? * ?? * ? This section of the state had a long season of good weather. %During that time many farmers made' great headway in the gathering of their crops. Now there is nothing expected but bad weather most of the time and thasc who have still left their crops in the field will find a harder time in gathering the products. . % The passing of the annual fair recently marked the close of the traveling show season for Conway, when the carnival company engaged by the fair association pulled up its tents and went to Lancaster, and then from there to winter quarters. Make preparations now to protect the water pipes at your residence this winter. There is no economy in allowing them to freeze up and, burst when they thaw. If there is no other way for you to save this expense, drain out the pipes when the indications point to cold weather. For the past several weeks E. W. McCracken has been in the employ ment of Sheriff J. A. Lewis unci has (been kept busy going every day serv | ing papers for the Court of Common Pleas and handling warrants for the j arrest of offenders against the law. ! The Sheriff h as employed him as' a 'special deputy to help him catch up with the unusual amount of woi:c ; that has accumulated and which : seems to be ever incieasing. Mr. McCracken states that from what he has observed conditions brought about by the use of intoxicating drinks is worse, if anyUiing, than it was bo fore absolute prohibition went into pffect. In his opinion, the aual ity of whiskey being used has a worse effect upon the subjects, running: some of them crazy for the time bein?{, and bringing out any criminal I tendency that happens to be lying dormant in the men who drink it. Very often he sees the effects of moonshine whiskey as he travels about through the tc.unty, but finds no way of running down the manufacturers of the whiskey, and only concerns himself with reporting those 'who violate the law while under its influence.
