FOR COTTON SCARE
Caused Big Quantity to Be

STATEMENT SHOWS
MISTAKE WAS MADE
Farmers Advised to Hold Their
Crop For Higher
Prices.
.
Last week there was published!
a statement prepared at the instance
of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange
Directors, and made public for the
benefit of the cotton growers of the
South. The secretary of the Exchange
is Henry G. Hester, who for I
the past fifty years has been regarded
as an international authority ,
on questions pertaining to cotton
marketing. This statement was prepared
by him and the substance of
it is that there is no reason for
rushing for Federal financial aid an '
that there is nothing the matter
with the South beyond an unreasonable
scare about cotton.
As we understand (this situation,
that for reasons that canno4; ho ex
plained, a scare developed about the
cotton market and it has caused a
large quantity of cotton to he rushed
on the market when, if the farmers
had not been afraid, and held th?
cotton, they might yet have received
as high prices for it as thev got last
year. The advice of the Cotton TCxchange
is that cotton be hold off the
market and not sold for less than :
cost of production.

( Wilmington Dispatch.)
Wilmington, N. C., Oct. 16.?The
white women of Wilson county and
those from every nook and corner
in the Old North State should be1
aroused over the following, which is,
an exact copy of a letter mailed out
from Greensboro to a woman at Lex
ingtom:
"Dear Voter:?The 19th amendment
to the constitution of the|
United States gives all women the
right to the ballot regardless of i
color; and we beg all the colored
women of 'North Carolina to register
and vote on November 2, 1920,
"The time for negroes has come.,
Now is our chance to redeem our
liberty.
"We have been driven long
enough.
"Apply to the registrar in your
urecinct to reirister.
The books for registration will
open on September .??0, and if you
are refused go at once to the Republican
lawyer and stall proceedings
in the United States court?
don't waste time with state courts?
the state courts are controlled by
Democrats.
"Don't be afraid; thore are plenty
white Republicans that will help us.
"The Democrats are divided over
the tax revaluation and the governor's
fight in the primary. Thousands
of Democrats will stay at
home next November and thousands
of Gardiner and Page Democrats
will vote the Republican ticket.
"We are sure of capturing the j
state this time if only the colored |
women will do their duty. Register!
and vote. The white women of
North Carolina will not vote and
while they sleep let the negroes be
up and doing.
"When we get in power we can do
mand what we wish and get it. We
hold the balance of power in Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio, New York and New
Jersey. We arc sure of electing a
Republican president?one that will
give us what we want?that is justice?hut
if we don't elect a Republican
congress his hands will be
tied, and we have the chance here
in North Carolina to elect a Republican
senator and over half of
the congressmen.
I "With colored women voting we
can control the eastern counties and
the industrial counties of the west,
I such as Forsyth, Guilford, Rowan,
Davidson, Cornelius, Stanley, Gaston
and Mecklenburg.

When we get thousands of voters
on the registration books, the white
Republicans of North Carolina and
the south will be glad to do as
their white brother and sister of the
north and west ? recognize us as
their political eaual.
"Wo are being backed bv them
now, but you know it is best for
them to keep under cover for awhile
