The high prices of logs brought to Conway now shows the great difference in the value of timber at the present time and some years ago, when spruce pines went for almost a song. The workers on the railroads and in the factories will *,.-1 one ugh of strikes when the farmers of this country decide to walk out and quit raising the food that is required to feed the world. The need of more houses is imperative all over this country; yc; ho prices of material is so high and labor so indifferent and scarce, that few arc to be found ready to tackle the job of building cottages to rent. All of the waste lands in this section of the country must be reclaim- | c\l and reduced to cultivation in the | course of time. o As no more land is being made, the price of it must always advance taking the averages as the years go by; and the only way to increase the amount of land available for agriculture is to reclaim that which if not now being used. A shower of rain here will lay the dust for a few miuutes only. With paved streets one shower would lay it for a much longer time, and two .street sprinklings each day would be a great saving to the merchants. o To those who are still opposed ti the general stock law as applied to Horry County beginning next January; let us say that in time this change which they regard as a curse i.cw, may later on be regarded as blessing. Mark our words and latei we will see. - (?? What we have done in this worl 1 i" about all that we amount to. Ii we have done much we are much am if we have done nothing, we ar: nothing. o To succeed in life one must lool outward at what he can see and no inward all the time. ? /, Improvements arc made slowly a this time and the reasons are to b found in the scarcity of labor * an materials used in work. o Continuation of the fence law i this county any longer would ha meant the fencing off from Nort ? Carolina, and a new fence to 1 erected between this county ai: Georgetown. * NO CHILL AND FEVER. For a long time past the heal! of Conway has been as good as ai of the towns of this State, and co siderably better than a number towns of about the same size, former times the chill and fever, lever and ague, as it was called a lacked nine tenths of the people Ihis vicinity, once or twice a yei often at shorter intervals. A gre improvement has been broug rbout in the last ten years, so th fever and ague has become a rath lare disease, and the improveme is due to better drainage and t vse of screens to keep out mosq? toes and flies. While the imprc/v rnent has been great along the b'nes, yet there is room for st l etter results, and plans are goii forward for still better things in t way of health, comfort, and co vonionco in this community. If we were as much concerned about keeping our premises in a sanitary condition as we should be, <-\ir sickness would be reduced to a minimum and the Board of Health v. on hi have little use for remaining in existence. But all of us have our own individaul ideas how things should be managed around our prem ises, and some are antagonistic to the other fellow's view; it often lakes a serious case of sickness, an i epidemic of some diseare or perhaps a toll of several valuable lives to make us realize that after all there is only one way of lroking at these matters and putting them into ' practice. But a bl ighter day is upon us. j Nature has so wonderfully favored us; placed some of the best things $he has in our very laps. A river and lake unsurpassed in beauty and stored advantages to be utilized, an ;nexhauslible supply of the purest water bubbling up out of the ground, and we have a $50,000.00 water and : ewerage system at our service. Ane yet so few of us take the a Ivantagvof these blessings. If we did not have them and could not get them we would have seme excuse; and yet there are some people in Conway contented to use water out of suriace wells and open ditches for do- """ mestic puiposes. t Theic is a movement in process of envelopment, and an ordinance which I will soon become a Law pa scd by I the Town Council, jequiiirg all surface closets in certain districts to be discontinued and closets 1o be connected with the public scv;er; and the residences which are rot in that district to be required to have sanitary closets. The garbage cart is I too antiquated and entirely inade| quate for our growing town, and the | above course is the only logical solution. Septic tanks should be in| stalled where sewerage connection j cannot be had and which are not expensive. But few business houses in Conwav have the necessary convenienc os for their employees. Business men who have upstairs rooms and I offices for rent should appreciate I the patronage they get by furnishing every modern necessary convenience for their personal comforts.: We have been too busy to thinlc of hese things. The war is over now and if we now fail to see a new vision of life we can attribute same to no other cause than the dollar of our prosperity hides from view a larger sphere of usefulness to our fellowman which lies within ouv grasp.
