PAGE SIX BETTER SIRES ! IMPROVE FEMALES! Very Rapidly After Farmers Begin to Use Them in Their Breeding | SOME STRIKING FACTS ON BREEDING SUBJECT Developments Against Use or] Scrubs Now Encourag? I ing Over Country. ^ I Tluit the use of purebred sires is usually a forerunner to ownership of vellbred live stock in the vara us classes and breeds is shown by data on breeding just made public by the "Bureau of Animal Industry, United States Department of Agriculture. The facts and figures compiled are based on records of the "Bott?i Sires?Better Stock" campaign, which at the close of 1919 had been in progress just three months. A greater quantity of data will be need cd before conclusive deductions may be made, but the following facts are considered of unusual interest to live c 1 n/?lr rru'nnrc The use of pure bred sires appears to lead automatically to the -ownership of a considerable quantity of purebred female stock. The use of purebred sires apparently results also in the culling out of scrub females, judging from the small proportion of scrub females to grade, crossbred, and purebred female animals owned by purebredsire users. Of all female stock owned by persons enrolled in the better-sires campaign at the end of the year, 71 i per cent were purebred, 2fi per cent were grades and crossbrcds, and 3 per cent were :scrubs. The scrub females are believed to b.' the remnants of former inferior stock before purbred sires were used, j since purebred sires lead automatical h to either purebred, crossbred or grade offspring, depending on the blood lines of the females used. Low Percentages of Scrub Fain ales. The percentages of purebre 1 females found in herds and flocks own ed by purebred-sire users was notice ably similar for the various classes of animals. In cattle the per cent o' purebred females was 63.5, in swine 64, in sheep 63. Poultry figures showed the smallest per cent of scrub females in Pocks headed by sires of pure breeding, the figure being 1.8. Poultry al so showed the highest per cent (78.1) of females of pure breeding, and the smallest per cent (1.8) of scrub females. Similar figures on horses, asses, and goats are not presented as the ei loilmcnt of t' e o animals is not considered sufficiently large at this time. Those classes, however, were GASOLINE SYSTEMS Oil Tanks and Pumps, Air Compressors, Computing Scales, Floor Scales Show Cases, Account Registers, R< built Cash Registers, Safes, Store Fixtures. T CHURCHES PLAN COSY PROGRAM Intcrchurch World Movement Outlines Activities In South For Months Ahead Beginning with a campaign of education of the church member to his financial obligation to tlie church, a comprehensive and continuous program of activities from the present time through the month of June has been decided upon by the Intcrchurch World Movement in tlie South. This campaign of education in the duty oi giving to the support of religious activities is commonly known in the movement as the Stewardship campaign. It will culminate on Washing ton's Birthday in the observance ol National Stewardship Enrollment Day in all churches participating in the movement, February 22 this yeai chancing to fall on Sunday. The Stewardship enrollment observance will be followed by the observ ance of Sunday, February 29th, as Life Enlistment Day of Prayer for l Students. February this year, for the first time in forty years, will have five Sundays. This fifth Sunday observance is to be made a day of significance throughout the lnterchurch World Movement's organization. The month of March is to be given over to the promotion of the campaign for life-work and evangelism, culminating in the observance of Acknowl- ? edgment Day on Palm Sunday, which ? this year falls on March 28th. Every church taking part in the movement is expected to hold special evangelistic services during the month. During March also there are to be held a series of state pastors' conferences in the principal cities of the South to bring the pastors more closely in touch with the purposes and scope of the lnterchurch World Movement in its relation to the individual church, community and denomination. Join the Church Day and Commitment Day, when thousands of new members are expected to be received into the churches in the South, will be observed on Faster Sunday, April 4th. This day will be marked by a 31 great ingathering of Christians in the churches inspired with the thought and determination of doing a greater Qorviro for Christianity The next fortnight in April will bo spent in active preparation for the great financial campaign to be conducted April 21st to May 2d, inclusive. Local teams and committees will be organized and thoroughly drill ed in the duties to be expected ul them in the making of this canvass for funds to carry out the constructive program of the churches. Throughout May and the early part of June the Movement will be directed toward the organization and peifee tion of conservation and extension plans. Later in June summer confer ences of missionary education wis! bo gin. included in the totals. Results of Work for Better Bulls Comments accompanying b'anks enrollment indicated tha* many livestock owners had used pur. bred | sires for a considerable period, which materially reduced the percentage of senilis. This is lik ly t> be true of a good many who enrol' e: rly in the campaign, but is evi donee pointing stiongly to the influ cnce of purebred sires on improvement in quality of herds and flocks. The drive which many Steles have been waging against sc ui> bubs was reflected in the enrollment figures. More purine I bulls were enr lied - j than any other class of live stock, ? except poultry. At the end of December there were enrolled in the "Better S res? B< Iter Stock" campaign 6,200 animals, and in addition 8,940 poultry, Facts Obtained with Special Care. Start to count them though and there are plenty of oaks?hen who have struck their ' roots deep into their home soil. One of the present day problem ? is whether it is worth while to attempt the task of increasing the- L. number of oaks and decreasing the * number of tuniblewecds. The fii^t thing to be noticed about the <IIQ* is that it is of slow growth. It does not spring up in a day. The next thing is that it establishes itself ty 1 iking root. Community building is oak growling-. Raising colonies of tumble- ^ weeds will not do the trick. ^ Before men begin to root deeply in a community they must have an i abiding interest in it. That community must be more than a cha c> fence corner into which they have been whirled. Too many communities are simply stopping places fywthc people that live in them. In driving home the fact that, community building brought about by a real community life is a constructive work, the present day Community Service movement has performed a distinct service.
