The will have its effect. More and better crops should be the aim of every Horry County farmer this year. o The good farmer will use all the time that nature gives him during the Winter months in getting readj for his crops. o The weather has not been col<: enough to hill many of the 'boll weevils in this county. Two hard snow would have helped a great deal. r ?o? Land may decline to some extent in selling values during the next few years; but in the opinion of many, it will never go down to stay but is obliged to remain high. Investigate the peanut and you will find that it is one of the most valuable things that are known as about twenty different products are now being made from it. Much good material has been allowed to decay in this section of the country during the last several -years while piices were low. Nothing will be thrown away "now. o In the matter of sweet notahnos we predict that Horry County will one day be the equal if not the greatest county in the State in the . total amount produced and the greatest amount per acre. o Some one remarked lately that the Legislature has not been doing anything and would not do anything during this entire session; and then another man said that the least they did the better it would be for the State. IIo says we already have toe many laws. -o Horry cotton farmers have not fully waked up yet to the fact ol the boll weevil. The weevil appeared at several places in the county ir last year's crops, and it has beer estimated by high authority that th< damage to the crop of 1920 in Hor ry County, may p >ssibly be as muci as forty per cent. o While the boll weevil inay not cu off the cotton crop in this count, this year to any great extent, yet i will spread greater than it did las year, and the farmers must wake Uj without delay to this menace an< make preparations to fight the con ditions which the weevil is bound t bring about. WHY THEY LEAVE THE FARM. "Why did you leave the farm, m lad? Why did you bolt and leave you dad ? Why did you beat it off to town And turn your poor old father down Thinkers of platform, pulpit, an press Are wallowing in deep distress. They seek to know the hidden cause Why farmer boys desert their pa's. "Well, stranger, since you've been s frank, I'll roll aside the hazy bank: I left my dad, his farm, his plow, Because my calf became his cow. "I lef^ my dad, 'twas wrong, c course, Because my colt became his horse. T 1 J 1 A. ? 1 i leu my uau 10 sow aim reap Because my lamb became his sheep, I dropped the hoe and stuck the for Because my pi# became his pork. The garden truck that I made grow Was his to sell, but mine to hoe. "It's not the smoke in the atmoj phere, Nor the taste for life that brough me here. Please tell the platform, pulpil press, No fear of toil nor love of dress Is driving off the farmer lads: It's just the method of their dads." ?Exe1 aoge. SAFE PROGRAMS IN 37 COUNTIES Clemson College.?During January there were held 37 county boll weevil conferences in the territory which the*boll weevil has invaded. The extension Service specialists and county and district agents took an active part in these meetings in that they led in discussions of such matters as probable boll weevil injury, varieties and practices Tor growing cotton ii the preence of the weevil, the place of livestock in safe farming, the growing of peanuts, tobacco, pota toes and other cash crops to replac cotton, marketing farm products etc. The conferences, held at the count> seats, were well attended by rep resentative farmers and business me. from all parts of each county, the number ranging from one hundred t> five hundred, an.d the total attend ance figures running towards te-^ thousand,?which indicates in itsek a lively interest in the boll weevil and the need for safe farming unde; weevil conditions. It was noticeable at the v.v iou conferences that those countie. which have already felt the force o weevil injury are ready now to tuiv from cotton as a mainstay and art eager to know about other mono, crops and to adopt a live-at-hom policy. On the other hand, the cou ties which were infested for the first time in 19J9 but which have not yet felt any injury from the weevil have less immediate in tore t in other money crops or general di Versification and are likely to plant good cotton acreages. The program adopted show that farmers in the extreme southern and western counties will plant very small acreage of cotton, say five acres per plow and will substitute peanuts and potatoes, and in some counties tobacco, and will generally speaking go in stronger for hogs. These will receive more attention than heretofore in the Pee Dee counties and other parts of boll weevil territory, but not to any great reduction of the cotton acreage. Matters that received more or less stress at all of the conferences were /1 \ T"> -i-i 1 1 1 ? vi/ oovier guitiuns, orcoaruB) poui I try, etc. | (2) Good family dairy cows. (3) More and better feed and pasture crops for livestock. (4) Better organization for maring. (5) The proper warehousing of cotton. ? LOV ELL-MARTIN.
