' and Usury. % CoBlcnz.?Illicit trade in food, with Is attendant evils of smuggling and isury, is on the increase throughout Germany, according to newspaper Accounts. The rationing system, has never >ecn abandoned even in the occupied ( >reas of the Rhineland and some of! he newspapers contend that the av-j rage individual cannot subsist on he amount of food issued. The auhoritics are making every effoit to heck the illegal traffic in focus of all vinds and the courts are crowded day if tor day. Smuggling of potatoes is being :arried on this winter in all parts of Germany on a scale greater than in var time. Germany produced an exclient potato crop this year and the uthorities are trying to save it from ailing into the hands of the specuators. Well-to-do people have been going o Bavaria from Prussia, Wuerttem>erg and Thuringia to buy potatoes, ggs and fats for which the farmors harged exorbitant prices. This work (1 a hardship on the poorer people vho could not compete with them. Living appears to be cheaper in Baaria than elsewhere in Germany. Sutter has been selling at five marks . pound, compared with 30 marks o Berlin. Eggs are quoted at 25 ifennigs each while in Berlin they ost 1.75 marks a piece. Eggs in the ccupied area have been bringing rom 2 to 2.50 marks each this wintev ut are very scarce at any price. Meat is also reported as fairly lentiful in Bavaria, although in all ther States this form of food is virually unpurchasable by householders b rough regular channels excepting nee or twice each month when the uthorities permit a few ounces to be istributed by the card system to the udividuals. Most of the hotels hroughout Germany continue to erve meat three or four days each cek however. The proprietors say bey obtain this from Holland and bat this does not violate the food emulations. w CITATION NOTICE. TATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, County of Horry, ty J. S. VAUGHT ESQUIRE, PROBATE JUDGE.
