FAOB TWO WAR AGAINST SIRES IN WEST VIRGINIA Parts of That State Soon Ruled by Pure Bred Bulls FORCES ARE AT WORK FOR MORE BEEF, ETC. "West Virginia?largely regarded as a mineral-producing State?is on the warpath to interest beef cattle production and its output of dairy products by eradicating scrub bulls, which are primary offenders against profitable and progressive live stock husbandry. Within a few months parts of West Virginia where the campaign is most active expect to round out a clean-up which will eliminate the sicrub bulls and leave the pure breds as monarchs of all they survey. The case of Roane County, W. Va., is an example of what West Virginia stock men accomplish when they go over the top. The live stock specialists of the State agricultural college, the county agent and officers of the Roane County farm bureau have solidly backed up the scrub sire cleanup. "Not a single man turned us down." remarked the live stock specialist in telling how the campaign to oust the scrubs was conducted. "The first of the year our local stockmen made a declaration of independence against scrub bulls, and work was begun promptly in taking a thorough lxull census. This investigation of sire ancestry showed that tliere were 200 bulls in the county, of which 102 were misfit grades and scrubs, while 98 were registered pure brcds. There were 57 registered Herefords, 28 registered Angus, and 13 registered Shorthorns. Fortunately, the army of 102 grades and scrubs was not as formidable as it looked on paper because 00 of these low grade siress were yearlings. Furthermore, the census showed that there were only 30 men who actually made a practice of keeping a scrub bull." By correspondence and personal contact with farmers the State live stock agent and the only county agent waged the battle. These men toured the county day after day visiting the scrub bull owners, holdingfarmers to assist in vel:?r^ "2 the scrub sires into the live-stock crap heap. In the main the scrub bull owners, once they learned the purpose' of the campaign, and once they appreciated the benefits which would result if they substituted purebred sires for the niongreel.s, wore glad to dispose of their inferior herd-headers. Detailed figures showing the increased value of calves sired by pure-bred over calves of scrub parentage were particularly convincing in gaining con verts. At one meeting a man who owned a scrub bull refused to banish him from his farm. "That bull of mine is a good one," he declared. "If I sell him for beef I will get about $50 for him. He is worth every cent of $80. I am not going to sell him for beef and lose about $30, because I can not afford to do it." "I will throw in $10 to get rid of that bull," replied the live-stock specialist "Here's $10 more for the same cause," said the county agent. This reduced the bull owner's belligerency but he still stuck to his guns. Then the president of the local farmers' club stepped forward and said, "That bull goes to the block. Here's the extra $10 to round out the price." Such scenes as his characterized the passing of the sciub and the victorious conquest of the pure bred. In a single day five scrub bulls were sold out of one community and Roane County is scheduled to be scrub-sire dry. Breeders Organize. The Roane County banks have aided the movement to replace poor bulls with good ones. Every bank in the county has offered to lend money at 5 per cent to farmers for the purpose of purchasing purebred sires as substitutes for their scrubs. The Monroe County livestock owners have organized a purebred short-horn rs- j J sociation, while the Marshall County! Purebred Live Steele Breeders' Club j and the Grcenprier Valley Shorthorn Association, including Monroe,! Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Summers, Raleigh. Fayette, and Mercer Counj ties, have been formed to aid i livestock improvement. Two years ago there was not single registered bull in Hardy Cou ty. Clemson College.?During the last two weeks no boll weevil maps have been issued by the South Carolina Crop Pest Commission owing to the fact that the line* would not have | been good after twenty-four hours. Requests for maps, therefore, have been answered by sending to those correspondents the various points in the state through which the weevil line passes according to the last telegraphic report from the inspector. The line at this time runs through Calhoun Falls, through a- point about ten miles above Columbia and Sumter, and 110 one knows how much further this line will have advanced by the time this report reaches the readers. The conditions for weevil migration have been the best possible, due principally to the fact that cotton stopped fruiting, and since the squares formed the weevil's preferred food, migration began in scaich of squares. Permits for the shipment of seed and hulls have been withheld over a wide latitude in the Eastern port of the State. The Commission fears to go as near the line as has been customary on account of the great activity of the pest and the necessity of j using every precaution to nrot ct free territory which w.uld noi. b' .er.ched bv the weevil this year.
