STATE FAIR BRINGS MANY WAR TROPHIES Carloads of Government Exhib its Coming?German Guns From Battlefields. One of the biggest features of the United States government exhibits, to be shown at the State fair October 27-31, will bo made up of trophies and other enemy material captured on the battlefields of France by American soldiers. The captured articles, including almost everything from a big trench mortar to a canteen, have just been brought to this country and have never before been on exhibition. The character of the display of captured material is indicated by the following partial list: Light and heavy machine guns, antitank guns, rifles and carbines, small arms ammunition, frenaten we infers, trench mortars, hand grenades, helmets of various kinds, sabers, officers' and enlisted men's canteens, sheila and cartridge cases of various sizes, trench periscopes, gas shells, smoke hand grenades, smoke pots anti-gas alarm devices, field telephones and switchboards, signal lamps, breast, reels and trench lanterns. Visitors to the exhibit will have an opportunity to compare the German equipment with that used by the Amci ican fighters. R to troops on duty in Russia, live car-; rier pigeons, some of which saw service on the firing line in France, national and regimental colors, insignia ( and campaign badges, wireless tele- j phone apparatus and various other j equipment from the ordnance department, quartermaster corps, signal corps, engineer crops, air service and i medical department of the army. One of the feature exhibits is a collection of 32 enlarged photographs, selected from 20,000 taken by army photographers in France. The navy will exhibit two complete exhibition models of fighting ships, and five small models showing the application of camouflage. Other naval exhibits will be radio telephones, torpedoes and their trucks, machine guns and rifles, guns of the kind that were mounted on submarine chasers, Y guns for launching depth charges, projectiles of various sizes and winter clothing, including a set of the kind worn on submarines. The marine corps also will exhibit a large number of articles of equipment. Other exhibits will be shown from the department of commerce and the department of labor. Altogether the government exhibit is expected to be of great aid in bringing the public in closer touch with the activities and achievements of the government. Two freight cars are required to haul the exhibits and 8,000 square feet of floor space in which to set it up. mustTendcarT TO HANDLE SEED Failure of the railroads in the state to supply needed cars to move cotton seed from various points in South Carolina to the oil mills caused the South Carolina railroad commission to order the Southern and Seaboard to dispatch cars to the state immediately. Complaints of a serious nature were received from cottonseed men at Kingville, Wateree, Pinewood, Rimini, Angelus, Bothune, Jefferson, Chesterfield and other places that no cars were available to ship seed. In this letter to the President, dated July 8, 1918, Mr. Hoover said he rlid not believe "any useful purpose is served by public ventilation of interdepartmental disagreements as to governmental policy," and added: "If congress passes sufficiently strong excess profits legislation it will automatically correct the situation ami meet the view of both the trade commission and ourselves.
