Statement That Government

San Francisco, Cal.?The strike of
railway men in hte extreme west and
southwest, from indications, was
crumbling today.
Warned by Walter D. Hines, directoi
general of railroads, that if they
did not operate trains by 7 o'clock
Saturday morning the railroad administration
would undertake to do so,
sentiment among strikers swung toward
a return to work in many instances.
San Francisco yardmen, after having
been out about Mi hours, agreed
to return to work at 8 o'clock.
Virtually conditions had been restored
at San Jose, Tracy and Oakland,
important points in the handling
of trains to the South and East, striker?
having returned to work last night.
At I/Os Angeles the question of returning
awaited approval of the meeting
of union officers today and second
meetings of the locals represented
by those officers. These meetings
were called to discuss reports of international
union officers who last
night conferred with railroad admin6C>6

ist ration officials. Optimistic state
ments regarding a return to work
were made by spokesmen for the
union pien. At San Bernardino, Calf.,
where members of the Big Four
brotherhoods were out, the engineers
were said to have expressed willingness
to return to work but were bound
by an agreement that a!! four crafts
would return together, while other
crafts continued to oppose a return.
Meanwhile, traffic continued virtually
paralyizcd from Albuquerque, N.
M., and Yuma, Ariz., west to Los
Angeles and for a considerable distance
north and south of that point on
all lines.
No alleviation was reported from
desert towns, dependent upon rail
transport for water and food but there
were no reports of suffering any
where. Steps for conservation of water
continued at several points, however.
Like measures were applied
to gasoline at a number of places.
Automobiles were still being used
! to handle mails in a number of instances
and is was said this method of |
moving the mail would be continued
until it was seen that train service
had been restored.

full service on the roads affected in
California, Arizona and Nevada, reports
showed that some of the strikers
were obeying the orders of their
international chiefs and were returning
to work.
Mr. Hines in a statement addressed
to "Public officers, Railroad officers
and employes and citizens generally"
in the three states, served notice that
all striking employes who failed to
