ATTACKS FEDERAL CONTROL OF FOOD Senator Says Proposed Legislation Would Result in Higher Costs DEFENDS INTEREST OF BUSINESS MEN Declares They Did Much to Make the Country Great. Washington?An attack on goVcttV 1 n.Mital tendency toward assuming control of business enterprises, with special reference to proposed legislation for supervision of the packing industry, was made by Senator Fornald, of Maine, speaking in the Senate. Stain nine* the Kenvon and Ken drick bills, vehicles of the packer regulation now under discussion, as ex amplcs of "stifling, throttling legislation," he declared his opposition t> them, said they were extensions of the policy which had failed in the transportation and communication industries, and predicted that the pub lie would suffer from higher costs and poorer service should they be ena ted. "I cannot believe the Senate of the United States feels after the experience we have had with government control of railroads, telegraph and telephone lines, that the policy should be continued," said Senator Fernald. "It would certainly lead to chaos and commercial bankruptcy. In behalf of the business men of the country, those who have had as much to do with making our country groat as any other class of citizens, I want to protest here and now against this proposed legislation. It is filled with danger to our institutions, and our system of government. It is socialistic. It is un-American, and it should be defeated." Defends Packers.
