Act Fail to Get a
Hearing
Washington.?Action on amendments
to the food control act suggest
cd by Attorney General Palmer as a
means of reducing the high cost of
living was blocked in the senate agricultural
commmittee. Chairman
Gronna hopes the committee will act
finally Tuesday.
The house agricultural committee
proceeded with its hearings with a
view to an early report on the amend
ments. Members of the house have
beep^kummoned to Washington in the
hope of early action on this and other
legislation recommended by President
Wilson.
In the senate committee, Senator
Harrison, Democrat, Mississippi urged
that the committee act immediately
but his motion was defeated, 4 to
2. Senators Smith, South Carolina,
Smith, Georgia, Kansdell, Louisiana, |
Democrats, and France, Republican,
of Maryland, voted against the motion.
In opposing the amendments Senators
Smith, of Georgia, and Smith,
South Carolina, as well as Senator
Kansdell, took the position that sufficient
power -now exists to meet the
siliwltion.
Senator Smith, Georgia, said two
' great movements now in progress
would reduce the cost of living and
return of soldiers to civil life, thereby
increasing production, and the reduction
in taxes in. 1920. Senator
Fiance said the food control act was
responsible foi! present conditions
and thflt. the way to reduce prices
^ was to increase nroduetion. i
