"Washington.?J. Willard Ragsdale, representative in congress from Sixth South Carolina district, died here suddenly July 23rd, just before noon. Those attending him at his death were: Drs. J. Arthur Hooe, Dr. H. H. Hareen and Dr. Doorman. For seveial days Mr. Ragsdale had been under treatment but was not considered seriously ill. He was at the capitol the day before and voted on the prohibition bill. His death occurred at Di. Hooc's office. Early that morning Mr. Ragsdale sent for his physicians and the repo.t they made that afternoon was that just before noon he died of acute heart disease, going to the physicians' oft ice for treatment. Although not apparently sulfering from ill health in any way and about his usual business Mr. Ragsdale was said by his physicians not to have been in robust health for some time. Mrs. Ragsdale is at their home at Florence. Mr. Ragsdale also leaves James W. Ragsdale, Jr., about 18 years of age, and a daughter about 14 years of age. House Adjourns. Immediately upon the announcement of Mr. Ragsdale's death, like a flash, the members of the South Carolina delegation in congress got together. Representative Byrnes made the statement to the house that Mr. Ragsdale had died. The house then adjourned out of respect to his memory. < Thr? VAmnins wava taken to an UI1 dertaking establishment and Coroner Nevitt held an inquest, after which . >he body was prepared to be taken to "Florence, where the burial took place Friday afternoon. The funeral train, bearing the mem hers of the South Carolina delegation and a special committee from the house and senate, left Washington Thursday night at 9 o'clock over the Atlantic Coast Line, arriving at Florence early Friday morning. The burial took place Friday and the party reached Washington Saturday morning on its return trip. Delegation to Probe Death. The members of the South Caiolina delegation will probe Mr. Ragsdale's sudden death. They said, after a conference at Mr. Byrnes office, that they were far from satisfied either with the statement of the physicians or with that of the District i : Look out when havinc the genuine Ford parts < are many "bogus," imitat No Bogus Ford Parts Here the authorized Ford deale guard against "bogus" pa I service. They expect to go to the bottom of the matter. Many telegrams of sympathy were sent Mrs. Ragsdale by numerous friends in Washington. 1 The funeral train to Florence was in charge of the sergeants at arms of the senate and of the house, respectively. and bore floral tokens of various kinds from friends and persons in official life. Governor Cooper, it is understood, will call a special election to be held some time in September to fill the vacancy in the Sixth district. FUNERALPARTY iriUCO PADITAi LLHTLO UHMIHL * Washington?Tho body of Congress man James Willard Ragsdale, who died suddenly in this city yesterday at noon, was taken from here to Florence for interment in the city cemetery. The two committees from the house j a ui senate, made up of distinguished ; members of both bodies, left for Florj ence on special cars, and tomorrow j afternoon the funeral will take ! place. Delegation Satisfied, ''"he members of the South Carolina d< legation in congress appeared satisfied today with the statements of the phvsicans who were with Mr. Ragsdale at the time of his death and of the coroner who performed the auI topsy and held the inquest. There seems to he no doubt now that Mr. Ragsdale had suffered for some time from a weak heart and kidney trouble, this affliction, in the opinion of I the physicians here, being sufficient j to cause death at almost any time. ) All day the body of Mr. Ragsdale lay I at an undertaking establishment, J where many friends called to view it for the last time. The floral offerings from many persons in congress and in official life were beautiful and costly. At the railroad station, just before the trip to Florence was be' * 11-1 I gun, Uiere were auueu many uuiti I testimonials in the why of wreaths and other floral designs, which will be taken to South Carolina and placed on the newly made grave tomorrow. . i 1. i S ' 0 MAKES GOOD SALE. Homer Hughes, a brother of S. A. I Hughes, well-known farmer of Conway township, has sent to his brother the following letter written by General Pershing, showing the gallant service done in the expeditionary forces and still as a part of the army of occupation in Get many. The letter of General Pershing follows: France, March '2(>, 1919. Major General Edward F. McGlarhlin, Jr., Commanding 1st Division, American E. F. My dear General McGlachlin: To the officers and men of the 1st Division, I wish to express my com-1 pliments upon their excellent appearance at the inspection and review en March 14th at Mantabauer. The high morale of all ranks and the condition of the artillery and transportation were what one might expect to find in a command with such a splendid fighting record. The 1st Division has the distinction of havinir been the first combatant unit to arrive in France and the first to enter the fight ing line. From that time until the present its work has been marked by a high state of excellence . and efficiency. After serving in the Sommorvillor and Ansauville Sectors the division entered the line near Montdidicr, and on May 28th took Cantigny. This attack may be considered as the begini ning of American offensive operations and its success had much to do with the creation of the splendid spirit thereafter displayed by American troops. In the Aisne.-Manne offensive, the division participated ir some of the most desperate fighting ox the entire war, and helped to insure the success of the Allied attack' During the early part of August the division moved to the Saizerais sec tor, and shortly after took part it the St. Mihiel operation, making i deep advance through the Rupt d< I Madt across the Vigncuiies-Sl. Do noid road to Hatton-Chattel. In th( " Meuse-Argonne battle the division ^ was twice thrown into the lino,?01 October 1st, at which time it pushe* B forward in spite of heavy resistance | and on November f>th, when, after ; ^ march of 20 kilometers to reach th jumping-off line, it attacked the one * my and marched on Sedan. B Since the signing of the armistic 0 the 1st Division, as a part of th ^ Auny of Occupation, has had th ? | honor of safeguarding the results o Jr jits victories, and for its conduct i ? | this work I have only praise and com 1 mendation.
