THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1310 Farm machinery should be protected from the weather while it is not | in use. o i tl-\A Knot n 1 *1 nv.'I U elU VUIiu Ut\ lr> tiic u^nt for the largest tobacco market in the State of South Carolina. o More and more the farmers are I learning to use machinery in their work. It is a sign of progress the Herald is glad to see. o Old Carranza cannot help showing his animosity to the United States. He would like toNhide it and at the same time show it to other countries who find pleasure in tolling this country about it. (? The farmers of this county must not forget wheat. While it might not produce money, yet. it can be raised during the Winter when no other crops are being grown, and it makes something to eat. o Owing to the high prices which still prevail and which are likely to be maintained for a long time to come; there is no danger in producing too much corn, hay, and other supply crops on the farms. o The preparation of the peace treaty was hard work and took a long time. It was trouble to make the Germans sign. Wc have no trouble at all compared to the task of carrying out this program. Now that it is signed by tlu> Germans, it will be the hardest task of all to make them obsei-ve the treaty. o In handling the tobacco crop this year it is very important to remembei that grade has much to do with th< price the leaves will bring. Raising a heavy large leaf and curing it ou quickly is not all that the tobacc< giowor should study; hut he shouh remember that it is necessary to pro duce a fine grade if he wants a fin< price. There is much yet to be learn ed by many of the growers in thl county, and we hope they will try t< learn and improve their methods o cultivating and curing tobacco. o TOO MUCH FINERY. Some people never get anywhere i this woiid with the things they war to do, because they spend all they ca make in the purchase of finery whic in many cases does not suit their sU tion in life, and is really monc thrown away. There are men wit plenty of ability which could be tun c<1 to good account for himself and h fellow men, if he hut had a sma amount of capital with which to sta in business. But he never has th necessary amount of capital bee am his wife or his daughter has to lia\ too much spent on dress or some otl cr way, and it takes all thai ho ca make from year to year. In 'In m.er time ho fails bo start the business ? intended to engage in, or to make tl improvements on the farm that would increase his income, and ko it goes from year in and year out, and he is always at the same place in his aspe rations. ? o NOW IS THE TIME. (Contributed Editorial.) It is well known that conditions along a state line are very different from those in the interior of a State. Communities are often linked together by natural conditions of in-( terests, even though a state line may run between them. When these twin interests appear there should be cooperation?not to separate them, but to cement them for the common welfare. We note that at a recent conference of Senators and Rcpre sentativcs of the first District, North Carolina., hold at Raleigh, it whs agreed to form a district of three counties north of Albemarle Sound and bond same for building a permanent road from the Sound to the Virginia state line, where the Virginia j authorities will continue same, also,1 twin projects for building a bridge j across Flint River at Albany and ' several permanent highways through Dougherty County were launched as a result of a conference between the Board of County Commissioners and a number of representative citizens held at Albany, Ga., recently. These twin projects will he found beneficial in many instances?well might the Eastern portion of Horry join forces with Columbus and Robeson counties in North Carolina and construct a permanent road to the seaboard at some good point like Little River, where fish, oysters, clams and ali salt water luxuries abound in abundance, JNow is tne unio lor tno good people of the up country to get busy with cross-country roads to all good points along our coasts. Good roads, good bridges and good automobiles and life is made much happier. n Statement of The Condition of The CONWAY SAVINGS BANK Located at vonway, S. C., at the Close of Business June 30. 1919. (A report which was false got into ciidilution in this county last Saturday evening to the effect that the Myrtle Beach Hotel had been burned. There was not a word of truth ;n the story. On Saturday afternoon a thick black smoke was observed in'the direction of Myrtle Beach and this was probaly responsible for the story told about the streets, and which gradually spread through the county. It is now stated that the smolco came from a piece of burning woodsland. o WHAT'S THE REASON? d *\ Many Conway People in Poor Health Without Knowing the Cause.
