Ways will be found to aid the far- 1 mer in financing the cotton crop. 1 o < Better drainage has done great 1 things for the streets of this town in the last year. ? 1 Many sidewalks are crying for hard faces of cement here. ( ? ] There is nothing in the way of , street paving now except the lack of funds with which to do it. 1 <> * We do not fully understand each 1 other in this world but it is human * nature to assume that we do. o 1 Farmers mean to hold together in j1 one thing at last. It regards the|( price of cotton. They have gone farj( enough to find out what they can do. 11 ??? It In curing the tobacco crop the'1 bulk produced is not all to be considered because the grade of the leaf has a lot to do with the price. ' ??? The Conway tobacco market is ini( need of a prize house to take care of 1 the leaf tobacco after it is transfer- * red from the warehouse to the buy- ( 1 ers. The market will not be able to 1 make a big success without a con- ' venience of this kind. o * 'We must all realize that nothing is : perfect in this world, not even the 1 courts of Justice are free from faults regarding the system by 1 which they are constituted and governed, and in their methods of pro- ; ceclure. o Onward and still onward the march of pVogress continues in this section of the State. As the force of combined State and Federal effort gees ahead with the road to Galivnnts Ferry, we know and feel that another milestone has been passed in the forward movement. o SUCCEEDED IN HORRY. To know that Horry County has produced a number of very wealthy farmers, one has only to go through the county and see what these men have done by sticking to their lands during the last ten to twenty years. Whereas this county has seen the time when K hnd in it very few farmers who could claim to be worth as much as from one to three thousand dollars, it now has in it a great number who can count their wealth as from ten to twenty thous- | and dollars. Thore are numbers under those figures and there is a number over that figure. These-men had faith in Horry soil. They did net move about from place to place, nor from their native State hunting a bettor location. They realized that the best place for thorn or anybody else was Horry County soils, and j they stuck to their ideal and won out I on it. , i MtrI r L GOOD HOUSES AT LOW COST. .CWHY? ? ? DIXIE HOUSE COMPANY, I CHARLESTON, S. C. | SOLDIERS EXEMPT FROM POLL TAX ? I Joint Resolution Authorizes Treasurers to Rebate This Tax ! Soldiers and Sailors in and around Columbia are now beginning to appreciate the passage of a joint resolution by the last general assembly .vhich authorized county treasurers each county to rebate the poll an 1 the road tax until January, 1920. Only recently the county treasurer )f Richland County turned over to Magistrate Coker about 1,500 poll Aiy. executions; Many of the executions were against soldiers and sail- . n\s, but they will be exempt from the payment of poll and street tax, according to the resolution. Since the possession of a poll tax receipt is necessary for voting m elections some question has been raised as to how soldiers are to get these receipts. Attorney General Wolfe has solved the difficulty by ! jiving the opinion that county treasircrs should issue receipts to solders and then mark across the face >f the receipt "rebated." This will noted the treasurer in his accounts. The resolution in full, as passed by ;he last general assembly follows: "Be it resolved by the general assembly of the State of South Caroina. That on and after the approval >f this act, the county treasurer of )acll COUntv of this Stlto is V?f>rnn\r iiithorizcd and empowered to rebate j .he poll tax and commutation tax for .he years 1918 and 1919 paid or io i >e paid by each soldier or sailor from ; well county, who was in active ser- j /ice in the world war. That all .owns and cities of South Carolina diall rebate the street tax until JanJury, 1920, of each soldier and sailor ? who was bona fide in service during ~ the world war. To this end, it is learned here a corporation will b:* formed to handle the exportation. By this source, according to W. N. Cox, president of the Louisville Ware house Company, all of the estimated forty million gallons of liquor ex! pected to be left on hand in Kentucky after wartime prohibition becomes effective, will have to be disposed of before constitutional prohibition is established. ?o j 4* it* -- 1 II nuuK KU1MR FINISHING \ JL All rolls developed 10c; packs 20c up; prints 2 l-2c-4c-5c; enlarging 35c up.
