Vanderlip, B former president of the National! fl City Bank of New York, told the E Pan-American Conference here that I trading between South America and I Europe could not be resumed as for- I mcrly for sometime as the situation I overseas "is more serious than has I been grasped on this continent or 1K even by a large proportion of the a Europeans themselves." 1 "Europe," said Mr. Vanderlip, B "has received such a shock as can I not be measured by those who have not seen it at close range. Men all I over the country are idle. The (lis- W orders are a result of idleness and I revolution and cannot be confined to I any one locality. 1 believe that I Europe is now balanced upon a knife B and that the future alone can fl " tell whether there wil he a eonfla- B gration or not. 1 "Aid must be given. The help must I be to restock the industries. Only its I own people can save Europe, by the I sweat of their brows and by labor. I The difficulty comes in starving the I middleman who are going starved by I the millions in Europe by unemploy- I inent gold, as they are earning no > I wages. In England alone more than I a million men are drawing $0,000,000 I weekly from the unemployment B fund. In Belgium the conditions are I similar. There is no labor. I "This gloomy picture is true and a I catastrophe may come out of the I present situation which will effect us I II the catastrophe is averted, a.* i I believe it will be, the position of those countries and of this hemisphere is supreme importance. "The industrial cycle must be resumed. A responsible minister of England said to me that if industries in Europe were not speedily resumed, if the British workshops cannot speedily furnish finished products to European countries, the government must export at once five or six million Englishmen. "Europe must have help. We of this hemisphere must grant it and it must he in material things needed so 2 that Europe can help herself."
