bill to abolish the State tax compiission,
hut the senate luts not yet
acted. Concensus of opinion is that
the upper house will s.nvo the tax
commission by a very slight margin.
The senate also has on its calendar
the Hambiin compulsory education
bill. The hill, however, will not meet

TEMPORARY ARMY
PROVIDED IN BILL
Washington.?A temporary military
establishment of 28,579 officers
and 509,900 enlisted men is provided
for in the annual army appropriation
bill reported to the house by the military
committee. The measure carlies
a total of $1,117,289,400. Th:
committee said an army of the size
recommended would be necessary

Reports from nearly all parts of

for its own Mr. J. T. Anderson.

Bertha White Hughes, wife of ,J. J. j
Hughes, and daughter of the late j
A. .). White and wife, Mollle S., who
after the death of her first husband j
became the wife of S. P. Hughes, of
Loris, S. C.
Bertha is well known both in Columbus
County, N. C., and Horry
County, S. C. She was born in Charleston
County, S. C., in the year 1880
and was married to J. J. Hughes, of
Horry County, S. C., on J,un. 12th,
1898 and died Dec. 4, 1918. In Quitman,
Ga., where she and her husband
have resided for the past five
or six years. She leaves behind a
devoted husband and four daughters.
