^?-?p?? ^x~ I KILLING OFRAY BY ROB JOHNSON < Explained by Grand-Mother of Deceased Boy Showing Threats Were Made. PUBLISHED ACCOUNTS WERE NOT CORRECT According- to This, Case Was Not Closely Investigated Before Trial. Rob Johnson, an eighteen year old negro boy was tried at the recent term of the court for the killing of a young white boy, James Hay. Under the showing made in the case the court allowed a directed verdict of manslaughter and the negro boy got off with two years in the reformatory. Mrs. L. D. Causey. in whose home James Ray was killed, makes an explanation of this killing which indicates that the negro boy commtted cold-blooded murder, and makes this explanation in the! ii* I lollowing letter addressed to the editor of this paper: Editor Herald:? 1 am deeply grieved at the tones of the article published in the Herald in regard to our dear little Jamie's unfortunate death. It was incorrect from beginning to end "Whoever gave you your information told what was false. You ought to have known me better than to have for one moment have given credence to it. Had I been in your position I would not have published such an article, as that about one of your Children. Now, that false statement has been given broadcast to the public for them to criticise me unfavorably, as though we're not suffering enough, more than enough already. Now the facts are just these: James was sick that morning, not able to go with his sister to Sunday School. He busied himself with his new 3rd grade books his mother had got for him a few days before. He played and sang his little songs on the organ. Jasey Green passed through the house and James was occupied with his books. About 1 o'clock James went to his mother and had a talk with her. She told him to come back, put his books up and put his little gun away (as it was by the back door where he placed it on Saturday afternoon when he and his sister came in from the field, he had used up his last eartrige. The gun belonged in my room,) and she would put dinner or thy table and come back and they would eat dinner and get ready tc go for me. (I went at 11 o'clock off Willie Price's to get him to tele-gnuph Camp Sevier and hear how Zeb was, he was sick with pneumonia, 1 could not hear from him.) James returned to the house and a he entered the door he took his little rifle and was going in my room tc put it up, when he was shot. A, fev more steps and he would have beer iia my room, just one more step am Vie would have been out of the range and have missed the load. * No one knew the negro boy wa: even in the house. The last seen o him he was standing at the fron gate, but when James went to hi mother, Rob slipped in, went in th< bed room and stole a shell fron Rich's suit case, and went in Zeb' room, got the gun, loaded it, an knelt down in a concealed mannei rested the gun on the corner c Zeb's trunk, which was by the doo and as James passed Zeb's rooi door he did not see Rob come b and pass in the house, passed c toward my room to put up his gu m; gut/ in jii?j|j*-i i un^i; iiw where Rob was concealed he sh him, then ran into the Ray hi room, we suppose to get anoth shell, but Rich and Jasey ran in quickly he had not time and r from the house. Some time before that he had fuss with Rich and said to him will kill you if it takes me 100 yet to do it." 1 heard the threat a went out and rebuked him, he sa "I mean it." But we did not give consideration. If Zeb had been home none of would have happened. Every Sunday after James rotu ed from church, he and Zeb sp< the day together. We could not 1 lieve the little boy was not safe his home, nor we never believed R with alt his impertinence, wo commit su^h a diabolical act. It c thinly whs premeditated, cold b!o > i i . . ? ? . I had sent the boy away on Saturday to his people at Little River. To my surprise ho returned. Then 1 asked him why.he returned, he said, i "he had decided he would ?o the j next week." The story he told was j made up. He was capable of it. J There was no handling- of guns on Sunday about us nor other time drilling. Thert again James had not been from his mother a minute before the gun was fired. The chill fell on his face, his little head near my room door, just one mere step and he would have been beyond th | range of the shot. The nt gro boy I was kneeling down very low accordI ing to the range of the shot. ' | Rob was insolent, gets angry with ' i out a cause, and he was verv insult) j ing, was very unkind to the chilj dren. We could not control him 1 | after my son left. He controlled ' j Rob, we could not. I tried to get - rid of him. Why was the Coroner and mom* hers of the inquest not sworn? * Why were they not called on to testjtify? It seems nothing was wantcc s , but the fixed up story Rob told am 0 , then make up a circus display ol 11 ' him for the public. Rob's whol< s story was a falsehood from begin ning to end. He was ill and con r> stantly with James is my reason fo ^ trying to get rid of him by sendinj r'ihim to Little River the t'.ay be fore he committed the murder. Ro concealed himself and waited fo m James to pass by, then he commit n- ted the awful deed which has wrecl m eel our home. ?t, ?Mrs. L. D.
