ACTIVITY FOR WEST AMERICAN6UNS BUSY On the major fronts the operation* continue,' as for weeks past, mainly of artillery duels, trench raids and in. tensive aerial activity by all the opposing* forces. In the operations on and the American troops continue to blew gas projectiles to pieces with their artillery. American aerial observers have been doing splendid work shooting out the gas tubes and reporting their whereabouts to the artillery. Not alone are the gas throwing implements coming in for attention by the American gunners but German batteries, trenches, wire entanglements and points of military concentration and munitions dumps are being given practical demonstrations of the accuracy of aim of the men behind the American guns. Additional batteries have been silenced by them, trenches and wire entanglements have been torn to pieces and ammunition dumps blown up. Airmen in Action. With the continuation of good weather myriads of airmen daily are to be seen over the lines dropping bombs in aerial combat. The British, French and German air services all reclaiming numerous victories for their aviators in fights in the air. Durng the first 10 days of March alone, British airmen are credited ?'il li nnnnnnl Min- TO " ,V" V/ I 1 \ I I I VIVA IIIM planes, while the German war office asserts that on Wednesday 17 cnoniv machines and three captive balloons were destroyed by German airmen alone the Franco-Belgian front. The situation in Russia and Siberia apparently is still far from being settled. Although the Germans and A.is tro-Hungarians still control territory from Finland to Odessa on the Black Sea it is not certain that the Russians will not again take up arms against them. The Bolshevik foreign minister Trotzky, has asserted that he will oppose the ratification of the peace treaty with Germany and advocate the reorganization of the army for the defense of Russia. Meanwhile influential newspapers in Germany already are beginning to see the loss of Germany's prestige in the Far East because of her machinations in Russia and to point out that Ger many's Russian policy has "placet! the game brilliantly" for Great Britain, the United States and Japan. Russians on Move. Meager advices from Constantinople indicate that the evacuation of the Russians of sections of Turki "<k Armenia the Turks are again harassing the Armenians but that the Armenians arc offering resistance. Erzorum, the principal city in Armenia' already has been reoccupied. Another case of "("rightfulness" by! German submarine commanders r j chronicled in a report of an attempt j to send the British hospital shipl Guilford Castle, with 450 sick or i wounded soldiers on board, to the hot-; torn. Notwithstanding the plain I marketings of the hospital ship, two | torpedoes were launched against it. ; One of the missils struck the vessel's bow badly damaging it, but she wa> able to make port with difficulty. o CORY SUMMONS FOR RELIEF, i (Complaint Not Served.) In directing the verdict for the acquittal of the defendants Judge Uicc stated that the evidence was clc ar that Hicks had shot Ilderton in selfdefense and that young Ilderton had gone to the rescue of the attorney ; fu r Dr. Ilderton had shot him down and was attempting to boat him oyer the head with a pistol. Judge Rice further stated that (loddings Ilder' on'.-: action was not born of malice toward his father, according to the evidence, but that he was impelled by his desire to rescue his friend. Solicitor (iasque then gave notice that I he would nol pros the count in the indictment charging Hicks and young Ilderton with carrying concealed j w capons. | The case was tried before a jury >T ! nine men. The State completed its case at the dinner hour, when J. Mon jioe Spears, for the defense, made a i motion for a directed verdict, plead j inj?* self-defense on the part of the i defendants. In opposinft the motion | for a directed verdict Solicitor Gas(,uo submitted that it had not been clearly shown that Dr. Ilderton fired I the first shot, and that if he had not ! Hicks was not entitled to a plea of self-defense. As to Geddings Ildrrtcn, the solicitor contended that the jury, should decide whether or not young Ilderton shot in defense of his friend Hicks, or whether he did so through malice toward his father, Dr. Ilderton.
