When they begin to draft tho girls, then all of the boys without any ex- < caption will want, to g<>t u ^ ?6?1 7~"~ r Great things in World history hav happened during the last* six months, i the greatest in years and years, lie mond of the Dart vour own country has played in these events. o Some people prefer to believe al' the wild tales they hear going about rather than read and learn for themselves, so they cannot be fooled. o Some of the men who were registered for military duty and want to be exempted, are apparently sticking to their exemption claims as closely as a booze fighter sticks to his brinks. They don't want to go. o This war means that we must win or die. Things must be settled on the other side, or else it will Ik settled here to our everlasting sorrow. Now We long for the time when the United States army will be able l< smash the German linos like so man} racks of card board, and with the slogan: "On to l'crlir." sweep on to complete victory. The local exemption hoards all over this country have be;n worked to aeatn during tno last several months; but at last they have sent the first quotas on to the camp-. Now after a while they will be engaged in going on through the list of all those registered, and before many months have passed away, eaMh and every man who was registered as subject to the selective draft will know whether he is liable to military service or not. What, does it matter if a few soapbox orators in New York city and perhaps other large cities of th< country are getting themselves >n trouble by reason of their loud-mouth od vapori igs of sedition. What little there is in this country of this kind of stuff may make good reading for Germans, but it amounts to nothing, for the whole country is virtually united as a single man for the downfall of Germany. There is nobody in better position to stand the war than the farmer who has his farm clear of mortgages; who has learned how to raise his supplies at home and does in fact raise them year in and year out. Let flour jro to $i>0.00 per barrel, and bacon to $^.50 per pound, and what does it matter to him, when he knows that he has all the hams he will need in his own smokehouse, and all the -bread that he can use in his own crib. It is a fine condition to be in and we have many in this county who are doing this and will continue to do it. Farmers are being advised to use more corn products and thus save the wheat; what we are trying to get the farmers of Horry County to do is to plant wheat and make all the wheat bread they want. Take our advice and plant wheat' this Fall. 1 The new national army is going into the business of war with a fine -pii-it, such as is always shown by armies destined to he victorious. What will the United States do about the war? We do not know how long the war will last, or how long the United States will bc in it, but we firmly believe, and there is every icason for such belief, that the United States by this time next year, will have in the field and in training- at home, the finest body of troops ever mobilized in the history of the world. I . ? In spending- your money, be it ever so little for a country paper, you are apt to act like anybody else who wishes to make the best investment possible of his capital. From one or more coi^ntry papers circulating in your immediate section, you would want to pick out the one that displayed the greatest activity in obtaining and printing for you each week, the items of news that would be the most valuable to you in every day life. While the quantity of matter printed might have something 10 do with the decision, yet quantity would not be all that you would consider; for you are really after the county paper that gives you most 'reading of live matters that are of benefit to you in your every day affairs. The Herald in the past several years has tried its best to give the most value for the same money, and that it is succeeding in this and that it has brought home to every one of its readers goes without saying, and the popularity and usefulness of thvpaper has grown greatly as attested by the great number of new subscribers c onstantly coming in during J the past year. Get your name on our list. Whether you quit other papers or not concerns us not at all. We only want a chance to show you of how much value a county paper can be to v ou. Take the Herald and you will ; see. a BIDS WA NT HI) FOR REB11BDINC. BRIDGES. The County Commissioners of Hocrv County, S. It is important for every farmc | who will plant wheat this season to | send in his name and the acreage he will plant, to Mr. K A Burroughs, chairman of the council of defense. The number of farmers planting an I the total amount of the acreage will determine to a great extent the size of the mill that will he erected in Conway in time for grinding' the crop | of next Spring. Make ail that you j iu ed for your own family use and (some to spare to sell your neighbor or ! ship away for the boys in K ranee. ' Horry can raise an abundance of wheat and we beli< \e the farmers v ill go at it with a will. # o The German crown prince recently ; had a long conference with Ihinee von 'i'urlow, the lormer imperial ehanc T loi. at the prince's Berlin hotel.
