George is quoted in the l/ondon pres.as
declaring to a London crowd in
promising it that Great Britain soon
would launch reprisals for the many I
Germany air raids on England.
The French reprisals already u;.d -j
way were continued last night.
French airmen dropped bombs on the
town of Baden, some 55 miles beyond
the French frontier. More than seven
tons of bombs also were dropped on
various military objectives in German
held territory.
Along the French front the artillery
duels were vigorous at many
points. The activity was especially
marked north of Verdun where the
French are apparently preparing an
attack to recover a few trench elements
which the crown prince's
troops retained when their main attacking
force was thrown back north
of hill 344 yesterday. A German attempt
to attack Itheims was broken
up by the French artillery.

Americans, if thoy would think of
the humble potato as a "breadstuff'
other than merely as a "vegetable,

the dietetic specialists of

valuable mineral substances useful
in the building up, repair, and

supply starch which otherwise would

Potatoes, of course, contain a larg j

Last Saturday, Seymour Carroll, of
Columbia, S. G., speaking here in the

Council of Defense, declared that the
icgro was the South's big brother.
1'hat to insult a negro is to insult the
American Republic. He is no longer
an African, but an American citizen,
he is no longer a slave, but a maker
and a component part of the world's
republic. Ak,v individual or community
that takes part in dishonoring

the republic itself. The rights of one,
are the rights and privileges of all.
The equal of one, must be that of the
other, the privileges of one in government
must he the privileges of all.

will be awarded to the housewife having
the besit booth exhibiting the conservation
of food stuffs.
There must be at least three entries.
The contest will embrace the
same points covered in that for the
farm display, namely,, qualify, attractiveness,
variety and quantity.
This will not conflict with any farm
display exhibits.
The officers of the association state
that the prize offered to the housewives
of the towns and cities of the
Pee Dee section, in appreciation of
the fact that they have made special
f efforts to conserve all of the food
products grown on their gardens and
town lots.
There will no doubt be a large number
of entries. In Florence countless
cans and glass jars have been put up
and in this respect Florence is no boctei

section, for the women have been
working every where. The nature of
the premium will be announced later.
