Ban FRENCH OFFENSIVE | ON VERDUN FRONT Strike Successfully Afong 11Mi!e Sector on Both Banks of Meuse MOVE THOUGHT TO BE IMPORTANT ONE German As&ault Near Epehy Completely Repulsed by British. ?? v I Monday'; news says tho French took the offensive this morning on the Yet dun front, striking along a sottor of I 1 miles on both banks of the Mouse river. Early official reports from Par's, while giving few details of the battle, say it has developed to the achantage of the French, and that prisoners already are passing- to the rear. The tirct reports <( > not snow wnctn cr the French h'.vc ir.nu unated a major offensive, although til > indications ire that the o;oratb n is an unusually important oi.e. There has been sharp fighting recently on the Verdun front, which has been the scene of some of the most sanguinary struggles of the war. It was in this rector that the German crown prince launched an offensive early last year1 < i i an attempt to break the French lir.c, losing several hundred thousand j men without gainingany material ad-1 vantages. Last week, the Germans1 made a sharp local attack there, pos- j1 sibly having learned of the French preparations and hopnig to break 1 them up. For several days the' French have, been conducting a terri- I < f?c bombardment on tlie bermun lines. ! In the north, the Germans made a M counter attack on the positions tdken | yesterday by the British near Epchyj< London reports that the assault was! repulsed completely. The British line on the Ypres front has been ad- ( vanced slightly. | Heavy fighting is in progress on the Italian front. The Austrian war 1 office announced yesterday that a ( * general offensive had been inaugur- 1 ated by the Italian1* on a 17-mile front from the region of Tolino to a point near the Adriatic. The Italian official statement of yesterday did not, ^ mention the attack, but press dis- ' patches from Rome today speak of 1 the new Italian advance, ami say the ' situation for Austria is grave. ^ Another graft aerial raid over Bel- * gium was made by British airplanse ?n Saturday night. Many tons of bombs were dropped on the various objectives. The British airplanes re- 1: turned safely after a battle with Ger- \ roan machines, one of which was shot \ down. 1 o ( f If your claim for exemption is denied by the local board, and you wish to appeal to the district board, vou must, within ten days . . t after the mailing of notice to you by said local board that your claim iias been denied, make claim of appeal on a blank furnished by the ' local board and file this claim of appeal with said local board; and 1 you must within the same ten days mail a notice of said appeal , on a blank furnished you by said ' local board, to: j W.
