rwo DIPPING WILL SOON INCREASE THE FLOW Dipping Does Mot Reduce the Yield of the Milk From Cows ' U. S. DEPARTMENT MAKES DECLARATION Experience With Millions ol # Cattle Has Proved This Fact. "Dipping; cows to kill fever tick.* actually increases milk yields," says the United States Department of of Agriculture in a recent statement. "This is proved in actual experiment and in the results obtained in thousands of dairy herds the owners of which are thorough bdievei-s in tick eradication by the dipping-vat method. This was established by records o. yields kept over considerable periods for ticky herds before they were dipped and for the same herds after they were lipped. "A herd of 20 lightly ticked cows produced 29 quarts less milk per day, or a loss of 5,800 quarts in 200 days' milking, than 20 tick-free cows of the same kind. Twenty heavily ticked cows produced 67 quarts per day less, or a loss of 1 If,400 quarts in 200 days' milking, than 20 tickfree cows of a similar breed. The monetary gain from dipping of the lightly infested herd would have ly-en $280 a year; from the heavilyticked herd a dipping would have given increased profits of $660 a year* "Here is an actual record from a dairy herd: A dairyman in heavily infested territory dipped his cattle. One week , after dipping, his herd of 4Z cows gave 10 gallons of milk a clay more?an increase of 16.6 per cent from the start. The milk sold fcr So cents a gallon, and he got $?.50 more per day from his herd from one dipping. He had begun to feed the cows instead of the ticks. "Those who assert that dipping diminishes milk flow judge entirely from the milk production for two or three days immediately following the trip to the vat. It is natural that for two or three days after a m.hch animal has been driven a few miles and gone through the excite mint of dipping, her milk flow will temporarily fall off slightly. The actual figures show that for two o?three days there may be a reduction ol an average of 10.6 per cent, or about 0.8 of a quart for an 8-quart cow. "That dipping cows to get rid of cattle ticks must increase milk flow can readily be reasoned out by anyone who will approach the subject with an open mind and not let his prejudices fight his pocketbook.
