this department, that they will re's
cclve their training there until fur;
ther notice. The cavalry units will
, also be trained at Oglethorpe, but (
J this was the original inteniton. Ap- j
i pb'cants for commissions as reserve
officers in the engineer corps, who
{ were selected exclusivley from men
j already having practical experience
as engineers, have already been sent'
to Bel Voir, Va.
Further assignments to special
j kinds of service will be made when
i the three months' term of instruej
tion is completed. For example, 150
men will be taken from each', tamp
j for the quartermaster corps. These
\ v-i 11 be lesser officers, captains or
lieutenants. Beside this, 50 other
students will be selected to be commanders
or second in command of
' motor truck companies, while the
commanding officer of each camp
has been instructed to designate fivel
Pien of much mechanical training fori
ordnance work, specially with ma.
thine guns. Commanding officers
are also instructed to submit on their j
own requests, the names of promi.s
ing students under 25 years of ag>
for aviation training at the end of
tamp, and it is the purpose of the
war department to consider all suci
. applicants. j
A particularly enticing offer i.
that the regular army will accept a
officers not more than 10 per cent. 01
all men at training camps between:
the ages of 21 and 27 years, examin-i
ation for this purpose to be held on

also be open to 'civilians, as have

BILLION DOLLARS
FOR AERIAL ARMY
Washington.?A billion dollars,
$400,000,000 more than previously
had been suggested, probably# would
bi required to carry out the proposal
o: putting 100,000 airplanes and
from 10,000 to 20,000 aviators into
the v.ar, Allan R. Hawley, president
of the Aero Club of America, today
told a sub-committee ol the House
military affairs committee. Mr. Haw
ley strongly indorsed the proposal,
saying it had been said that 25,000
aviators could do more toward terminating
the war than 1,000,000 additional
soldiers. He also indorsed the
^hrnnnrd-Hulhfrt hill, under ronsid
eration, to establish a separate department
of aeronautics.
"Our Allies are doing everything
they can to turn out aviators and aircraft
in large numbers,"-he said.
! "Great Britain, according to authoritative
reports,^ is A producing
; 4 000 airplanes Imonth, and
, France as many, but they are used
ixi fast as they are manufactured."
For Commercial Use.
h What might remain of the 100,000
airplanes when peace is restored
could be utilized for commercial, purI
p<. ses, he said. A French governj
rncnt commission now ' is making
| plans for such use.
Mr. Hawley predicted that the day
of trans-Atlantic air lines was -<*t
| hand.
"We are now manufacturing* ai.
i cruisers capable of crossing the Atlantic,
and have both the pilots and
the instruments needed for piloting
| ti.cm." he said.
