CTLY WHAT YOU NEED. llMnfkU, N. J. n<? UNIVERSITY NOTES. Lust Monday Pivtessor R?oc i Smith of the English department at jj the University and a great lavt rite I among the students, quietly slipped | away to Washington tor services at J the headquarters oi the inter-collegiate intelligence bureau. This wor?; is most important, and is a distinct recognition of Prolessor S nith'& ability. The organization of the University of South Carolina An.balance unit for service in France au-. nounccd Saturday, is diiectly u .dc: | this bureau and is one oi the man> phases of work which the bureau will undertake to put through. Professor Smith is unusually well qualified for tne work by training and natural ability. The many friends of Miles Gaskins one of our Horry boys were sorry indeed to see him leave us this week. Miles has joined the navy and has gone down in Horry to be with hi.pgople before being called out. Whi e we regret very much to see him leave we are glad that he enliste with the government. If he is onl> as proficient in his naval duties ahe has been in his work here on ti.c campus he will undoubtedly be wel rewarded in his new work. His friends here on the campus wish bin well and hope that wb.cn Sept< mix rolls around again that Mi'ts wi" have helped ir? destroying the gorn in Germany so that he ina\ retuin to ( his work licre and finish his coir, si here at Carolina. Another Horry boy made his d?. i parture from the campus this w< ck 1 to work in some branch of govern- ; meat service in Charleston. This wa Julian Dusenbury. The many frieno.* , he has acquired here since Scptc m her when he came to Carolina In.I d very much to give him up. "Du.se' was a member of the junior lav. class in good standing and for hi j volunteering in this branch of tlx | service he was rewarded with a pa ! on all of his work without having tol stand examinations. Wo wish ft him a most pleasant and profitah!? ; stay and trust that lie too will conn back in September to finish hi* course. He is now at Conway vi.-ii ; ing his mother awaiting the call. With the departure of more tha; ; thirty boys from the campus in t!;< past week things are looking ve. j dull and gloomy. This will not In", long, however, as '/.e schedule fo examinations has already been an nounced and many of the boys aiv down boning like all forty in orde that they may be advanced no:' 1 term. Among the contestants for t! ? Gonzales medal which contest \\ a held last week in the chapel wa Howard Little one of Carolina's Hoi ryites. Howard did not win the n ed al, but made a most cerditable show ing and if lie comes back into th contest next year somebody wil have to get up before day or watch him take the prize. Among the best students on 4' < campus is Frank Green. This >' u dent from the tall timbers of T< Id. ville has been doing some exeelhn work here since the beginning of tin second term as was evidenced by th< splendid report be received r cently | He is taking seven subjects and made firsts or better on all of them. Tni.is a splendid showing for our fiiciv Green, and we trust that he will continue to pull down these good marks during his say on the campus. Forecast?2.. .
