IR* rwo EARLY VEGETABLES FROM SEED BOXES No Necessity for a Hot Bed When Seed Boxes Answer EARLY POTATOES AND I OTHER GARDEN TRUCK Can Be Had Early by the People by Seeding Them in Boxes. home gardeners who do not own a i hotbed and who can not readily bu;> young plants can got much earliei crops of tomatoes, cabbage, cauli flower, peppers, egg plant, and lettuce if they will start the seed for their early gardens in seed boxes in the hou&e. Early potatoes sometime*, are forced in the same way. Seeds so planted germinate and are ready tor transplanting by the time it is Isafe to vow the same kind of seed in the open ground. When danger ot frcst is over and the soil is drj enough to work, therefore, the hom< gardener starts his early garden with * seedlings well above the surface T wmcnlnnf ino1 if nrnnarlv /Intm 111 I stead of hurting, seems to help such ? plants develop a strong root system R Garden enthusiasts should get a gooc I deal of pleasure from this kind o' I preliminary indoor gardening. They I also can use boxes to hasten tlu I* blooming period of many sorts o flowers which stand transplanting. Any sort of wooden box filled with good soil answers the purpose. The following directions for making seed boxes and handling the plants havt heen prepared by the Bureau of Plan Industry and the Stales Relations Service, United States Department ot Agriculutre, for the guidance of the canning and gardening clubs in tlu, North a"d West. Making a Seed Box. Seeds of early tomatoes and cab boge, as well as cauliflower and peppei, should be planted in a seed box in the house at once. The seed bo:~ should be 3 to 4 inches deep, 12 to 14 inches wide, and 20 to 24 inches long. A layer of about 1 inch of gravel or cinders should be placed in the bottom of the box, then it should be filled nearly full of rich garden soil, or soi' 1 enriched with decayed leaves or manure. The rich soil beneath the famil;. woodpile or around decaying logs if splendid for this purpose. The soil i should be pressed down firmly with a K s nail piece of board and rows mad' one-fourth to one-half inch deep am 2 inches apart cross wise of the box The seed should be distributed 8 or 10 t: the inch in the rows and be cover f j'l. The soil should be watered and , the box set in a warm place in the light, In the sunshine by a window being best. Water enough must b? [ given from time to time to cause tlv reeds to germinate and grow thiiftily, but not enough to leak through f the box. If a piece of glass is used to cover the box, it will hold the mois' ture in the soil and hasten the germi} notion of the seeds. Take Out Surplus Plants. When the plants are from an inch to an inch and a half high, they should be thinned to 1 or 2 inches f \ apart in hte row so as to give them space enough to make a strong stocky growth. Tf it is desired to keep the plants which are thinned out they may be set 2 inches apart each way in other boxes prepared as men ticned for the seed. When the weather becomes mild, the box of plants should be set out of doors part or' the time so that the plants will "harden off" in preparation for trans planning to the garden later. A good watering should be given just before the plants are taken out of the box for transplanting so that a large bail of earth will stick t0 the roots of each one. o CLEAR AWAY THE WASTE.
