TWO GERMAN "HIKERS" HELD AS SUSPECTS Clippings and Photographs Cause Investigation by Officials MOVEMENTS OF TWO YOUNG MEN TRACED Say Woman Traveled on "Honeymoon" With at Least Two Men. Atlnnf.n Hn.?Rvjimination of the effects of Valerian Johannes Pleczynski and Hugo Coutandin, German youths arrested here last night, today led government officers to investigate whether or not there has been anything sinister in the movements of sveeral German "hikers" walkinv over the United States in the past two years and a half. The police say they told them they were walking around the world on a bet. Newspaper clippings with photographs show they have been supposed to bo doing the same thing with at least seven other companions, one whom is a woman. Woman Companion. One photograph shows Pieczynski with a young woman and the accarr.panying story tells that they were walking from Chicago to San Francisco on their honeymoon. Another shows the same woman with a Ger man giving the name of A. T. Another photograph taken at Tampa, Fla., shows Enden and Coutandii. in "hiking" costume. Coutadin there described himself as a wireless oper ator. Officers say they also huvt * photographs showing one or the other of the two held here incommunicado on "susri ion," paired wit., at least five other men. The officers say that papers take* from Pieczynski's knapsack show that he had been a sailor on at leasthree American coastwise vessils ii the past two years and a half, an<* that Coutandin acted as assistant chief in an Illinois club, the name of which they did not make public. . t Other papers, the officers say, shov ; that Piecezynski took out first naturalization papers in New York July 8, 1915, and that on September 8, 1915 Coutandin applied for citizen ' ship at Chicago. A., where they arrived yesterday j NEGROES^DEFRAUDED ; IN MIGRATION GAME: Mobile, Ala.?Seven negroes arcunder aiTest here charged by the police with defrauding 625 of their race who paid for membership in a socalled "can't-get-away-club." The promoters of the scheme, the police charged, promised to transport the 4 negroes to Philadelphia, the "land and promise," where they could earn from $3 to $6 per day, where work j was plentiful and where "equal c rights" were to be obtained. The ( membership fee was $3 and for that c sum transportation from Mobile to Philadelphia "in special cars" was j promised. Many of the victims made ^ weekly payments and last night j was the time set to get "final in ^ structions." j Next Saturday was the date set,' for the special cars to leave. Four of the alleged leaders were arrested as they were boarding a train. They had mileage to Cincinnati.
