Methodists Alarmed by Spread Of Mania for Grotesque Religion. The imitation of Billy Sunday methods &nd the stampeding: to his sort of evangelism by the young men of the church is threatening the very foundatipns of the Methodist Episcopal church and all Protestantism, according to a warning delivered to the ministers and lay delegates by Bishop Joseph Berry, presiding over the eighty-first conference at Atlantic City, says a report to The New York World. "Personally appointed evangelists who have an astonishing mania for grotesque religion" are making their presence felt on every bishop of the church, according to the presiding bishop, who warned his hearers against the danger of supplanting pastoral evangelism with this "startling and spectacular system." "The stampede has reached alarming proportions," said Bishop Berry. "These young men employ the methods of Billy Sunday, imitating him and often using his words. The wide newspaper publicity, the shower of gifts, huge collections, the reputation of saving thousands of s<?>uls amd the financial aspect are having thtfir too strong appeal. We are on the verge of surrendering our responsibility to the roaming evangelist. Are we ready for it ? It is time for Methodists in the name of ?God to call a halt. Miss Jessie and Hampton Dusenbury attended the "Movies" in Con- 1 way Thursday night. Miss Marguerite Oliver, who has just finished a successful term of 1 school near Loris, returned to town j Saturday. Carl Dusenbury, one of our most 1 talented young men, who left here ; one year ago to accept a position in a drug store at HopoviUc, Va., when trouble was expected with Mexico volunteered and enlisted with the 1st Virginia regiment and held a position in the Medical Dept, ranking as Sergt., returned home Sunday. Mr. Dusenbury underwent an opei-ation for appendicitis in Richmond two weeks ago. ' It seems that "Field's Day" is attracting people from far and wide, and we believe it will be well attended from our adjoining counties. Miss Irene Walker and ot.her prominent young ladies of Fair Bluff are expected to be present. Miss Walker is a cousin of Miss Jessie Dusen-i bury and is pleasantly remembered here having spent Christmas with us. The farmers in this section are preparing their land and the present' indication points to a large crop of corn, peas and potatoes, provided wo have favorable seasons. Miss Grace Haselden returned last week from a trip to Florence and Marion. The' address was heard by a large and attentive audience who appreciated the eloquent speech of Dr. Smith. The next address of this series will be given in Flinn Hall next Wednesday night at 7:30. Mr. Beverly Herbert of the Columbia Bar will speak on "The Legal Profession as a Life Work." The Febiuary number of the Carolinian came off the Press last week and has caused much favorable comment. We hope that this pretty warm weather we are having at this time has reached Horry and that our good friends there are being benefitted very much. Mr. J. C. Brown has been a little indisposed for the past week. It seems that the recent, "rub" of exams caused him to over work himself. We are g'ad to note at this time that he is out again and attending to his classes. If he has not yet fully recovered we feel that he will soon as his room mate was seen going over to the room recently with a large box presumably from home and if his Horry friends continue to visit him as frequently since its arrival as they did before there will be no room for indigestion. ?Forecast NV). 2.
