P 9BE HOQUtY HB&j This Simple Laxai A H Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin Should Have a Place in Every Home. Constipation, or inaction of the bowels, a condition that nearly every one experiences with more or less frequency, is the direct cause of much disease. When the bowels become clogged with refuse from the stomach, foul gases and poisons art generated, and unless the congestion is quickly relieved the system becomes weakened and most susceptible to attack. Various remedies to relieve constipation are prescribed, but many of these contain cathartic or purgative agents that are harsh and violent in their action and shock the system The most effective remedy is the combination of simple laxative herbs with pepsin that is sold in drug stores under tthe name of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. The Hon. John D. Keister of Brandywine, W. Va., who has represented his district in the State Legislature for six years, writes that he uses Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin and finds it a splendid laxative, easy to take and mild, yet positive in its action, and that it should be in every household for use when needed. Dr. Caldwel's Syrup Pepsin is soldi by druggists in all parts of the United States and costs only fifty cents HEAVIEST FIGHTING NOW IN RIGA SECTOR Germans Take Russian Positions, but Later Are Forced Back a Little. New York.?The heaviest fighting now in progress in anv of the wai ! * I areas is on the Russian front in th< Riga sector where the Germans re-1 cently took the offensive and drove | back the Russians a mile and a half in the region of tlie great Tyrul marsh. Berlin announced today that the attack netted the Germans strong Russian positions on a front of about i1 six miles, with more than 1,700 prist oners and 13 machine guns. Washington.?It is understood that , the department of justice will take a hand in investigating the manipula tion of cotton contracts. Recently cotton factors of Charleston, Sumter and other points have communicated by wire with Repre- 1 sentatives Lever and Whaley relative , to the recent slump in the price of , future contracts in New York and New Orleans, alleging that this , slump has been due to manipulation of contracts. An investigation by < a congressional committee was suggested. i Representatives Lever and Whaley have conferred with representatives and senators from other cotton producing States and have gone into the LUD, OOKWAY, ive ousehold Necessity u bottle. It contains no opiate or narcotic drug, does not gripe, and is recommended as a family laxative, mild enough for the tiniest habc, yet sufficientlty powerful to act easily on the strongest constitution. To avoid imitations and ineffective substitutes be sure to get Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. See that a facsimile of Dr. Caldwell's Signature and his portrait appear on the yellow carton in which the bottle is packed. A trial bottle, free of charge, cim be obtained by writing to Dr. W. IB. Cald well, 455 Washington St. Mont'cello, Illinois. mul then attacked, but failed to make any headway. A similar result mel attacks between the marsh and the river Aa and here, in a counter-attack the Russians dislodged the Germans and drove them back. The fighting extended to the southeast of the river Aa near Kalnzem, which lies 20 miles southwest of Riga. Here the Russians, after taking the offensive, were caught in a counter-offensive of the Germans and compelled to retire to the northward | a third of a mile. Lieutenant George Guynomer has brought down his 27th airplane, the Talis war office announces. A German surprise attack south of Berry-au-Hac last night was checked by the French. There was no change 1 in the situation on the remainder of the front. Elsewhere there has.been little artillery, patrol and air fighting. En- , tire quiet apparently prevails all [llcng the Roumanian front, where the severities of the winter weather have checked all operations except sporadic bombardments and skirmishes. Greece has formally apologized to the entente, in compliance with the demands, for the events of last December when Greeks fired on the en- 1 Lente forces at Athens. The inquiry to be worth anything would require more time than is possibly available between now and March 4 and since this congress dies on March 4, whatever work may have been done and left uncompleted would in a measure be wasted. They have, therefore, decided that if there is any conspiracy to depress the price of cotton, as some of the telegrams allege and as the sudden decline might indicate, such a conspiracy should be handled by the department of justice and the conspirators indicted under the terms of the Sherman anti-trust law. The telegrams, letters, and other communications in the hands of Messrs. Lever and Whaley have been turned over to the attorney general with the request that he make a thorough and searching investigation under the authority of law. ? .i . . i ,i ,, See the Shielding Shadow at the Pastime. hi ?? $ COPY SUMMONS FOR RELIEF (Complaint Not Served.) The querry read us follows: Resolved: That the City Life is More Enjoyable than the Country Life. The affirmative was represented by I la Hyman, Berry Jordan, Emaline Hyman, Simpson Johnson, Walter Martin and Joe Capps. The negative by Annie Capps, John Capps, Mayfield Singleton, Grier Jordan, Edna Martin, and Norman Johnson. The querry was ably discussed by both sides before a large audience. After which the judges immediately expressed their decision in favor of the negative. String music was rendered at different intervals by the teachers, Mr. M. D. (Jox and Miss Grace Hendricks which added considerable interest to th< occasion. After finishing the program the pupils assembled in their usual manner and marched forth mingling their voices in the singing of the song "March Along." We h&Ye a debate every other Friday evening by the upper grades and speeches by the primary grades. On the next meeting it is decided to have a play by the seventh and eighth grades which will last for one hour. Everybody is cordially invited to attend. ?SCHOOL BOV. / ? ?-??? - " t ire insurance Life Insurance ?Bonds si <i\ -Afoil ellsT' Office in A ~" \ - \ |pf> PEOPLES NATIONAL BANK O. A. Spivey W. B.
