GERMANY IS SHORT OF FIGHTING IMPLEMENTS V I Document Captured by British Says Kaic.r s Soldiers Have Supply of Food. ? German; is short of guns, aerop'unr.s and ar material of all sorts b 't not of food, according to a most * .ioatioually interesting document the British have captured, which is called "Experience of the Fourth Ger man Corps in the Battle of the Som-< me." The document was written as inBtrUCtlOTMl to fhn trnonR If wnc /Irnwn from the lessons of the battle by Count Sixt von Yvon Arnim, the corps commander, who has beei fighitng opposite the British through out the defensive. The long detailed revelation of the inner thoughts o! the German staff discloses the methods and shortcomings of every branch of the German army in view of the unexpected power and organi zation the Brit'sh have shown. The document starts out by paying a tribute to "the British infantry, which undoubtedly has learned much sii.ee last autumn's offensive." "It shows great dash in attack* the document continues. "The Eng lii-hman also has physique and training to his favor. One must acknowledge the skill of the English in rapidly consolidating captured position* i 11? ; aim uirir great tenacity in their fie fen.so of them." Because the breech action of so mi.nv German rifles have been clogred with dirt, General von Arnim suggests in the document that it would be advisable to put a cover over the breech of the rifles like thu' used in the British army which can be easily unfastened and then hangs from the rifle. British Guns' Effectiveness. Explicit insrtuctions are given in the document to the artillery to change their methods of placing batteries in the villages and behind steep slopes because of the British method of distribution of their artillery fire, which prodigally searches all obvious shelters. Owing to the terrific concentration of the British; : artillery fire, says the document i front lines of trenches should be thinly held and dependence placed >n small groups of machine guns. Once the British lay a curtain of fire on a trench, it adds, the men had better' -evacuate it and lie down in the open. Most interesting to the officers, in view of the fact that the British | have so consistently held ground that tbov have taken against counter attack, is what General von Arnim says on the subject. "If counter attacks, which on ac-1 count of the situation ought to be' methodically prepared, are surrend-1 ered '..ney cost much blood hecaus"| the troops lose their trust in the leaders if they fail, which nearly al ways happens," says General von Arnim. He then complains "that the existing telephone system has proved totally inadequate in consequence of the development of the fighting" and says the artillery signal system broke down. The .story is one of the best serials the Herald has yet published. It is a love story in high life, though the lowly come into it as they would have to do to make it real. There is noi so much of the "kill and drag out" and "blood and thunder" usually displayed in serial moving pictures and it is well known that tne public has become tired of that kind of stuff. A fine love story like Glora's Romance is far better. Mrs. Ella King, wife of W. 11 King, died at her home near Ever Green last Friday and was buried at Union church the following day. ?
