Monday or be subject to indefinite delay. Independent of the transportation strike the railvoads are facing a new labor problem in the threatened strike of oo,000 shopmen on 20 roads west of Chicago. Further deterioration of the growing cotton crop during August has reduced the estimateed final production by 1,116,000 bales to a total of 11,800,000 equivalent 500-pound bales. Samuel Gompers, says that the Federation of Labor supported the brotherhoods and protested against compulsory arbitration. He attacked government operation of roads for military purposes, contending it was conscription and indefnsible in times ot peace. Vermont national guardsmen who left Burlington under orders from the war department to proceed to Eagle Pass, Texas, abandoned their trip because, according to officers, the railroads would not guarantee that the troops could reach the border before the time set for a strike. After a night of violence last week resulting from the attempt of a mob to lynch Charles Daniels, a negro i\c. cured of assaulting the wife of a prominent farmer, at Leina, Ohio, the spiriting away of the prisoner by Sheriff Sherman Eley and the torture of the sheriff until he consented to lead the mob in motors to Ottawa, where he had taken the man, the law apparently reigned again.
