C.?The Rock Hill Record of last week spoke of a white worm about one and one-half inches long that was playing havoc with squash vines in the vicinity. J This wt rin is the Squash Vine Borer. Its presence can be detected by the f accumulation of a yellow substance !i cast out from the burrows about the r base of the plants. Early in June (I this i? rmJ+A nnf inouKln "nil jf when seen by the gardener, the borers should be carefully searched for and removed. This is done without I much additional injury to the plant J by splitting the stem lengthwise just above or belo.w the point that the yellow substance is pushed out, and then picking out the worm. Spraying has f no effect because the worm is on the * inside of the vine and cannot be reach ed in this way. i Good results are had in controlling this insect by planting as eaiMy as possible a few summer squashes such [ as "Crookneek" and "Early Cymblin" before the main crop of late varieties comes on, and placing these early ^ plants so they will he between the rows of the late varieties. The Summer squashes attract the insects in number, leaving a smaller number to deal with the main crop. As soon as the early crop is gathered, or earlier, if the ground is needed for the main crop, the vines, root and all. should be pulled and burned to destroy any eggs or insects that might be within The same treatment is followed after gathering the later varieties. The insects pass the winter in the ground near where the plants upon which they fed stood. Numbers of tin m can he killed by lightly harrowing the surface of the field in the fall, so as to bring the cocoons to the surface and expose them to the wet and cold, and then plowing in the/ spring to a uniform depth of at least I six inches, So that the adults will not b ? able to get out. When the vines have attained some .length, parts of them should be covered with earth so that other roots will be sent out in case the main root is injured by the borer. Keeping the plants in good condition, free from other insects, and well nourished, by using manure or other fertilizers will I also aid them to withstand attack. C.?When the lower leaves of the corn begins to turn alittle yellow, and the ears begin to look as if they are fairly good sized, the farmers' hands begin to ileh to got into the field and pull the fodder. Instead of standing right still and scratching his hands, as the quickest and best way to get rid of the itching sensation, and as the long headed man will do, hundreds of farmers over the state put all hands at work stripping the corn stalks. There is no question but that fodder is a good feed. It would have to be, for a whole lot of the food that would later be in the grain is in the leaves, but this taking ofV* of the leaves causes the grain to shrink, and the corn will be much lighter in weight, and will not bo of sn crnnrl quality for breeding purposes. Not only this, but the corn will not keep as well as it would if it is allowed to mature without pulling the fodder, and it will not make the best seed corn. Experiments conducted by Mr. D. It. Coker of Hartsville, S. C., showed that fodder pulling results in a reduction of yield of from 10 vr cent to 24 per cent, depending upon the ripeness of the fodder, and the loss from rot is from 8 per cent to 10 per cent more in the grain from fodder-pulled corn than it is in the grain from corn that has not been J fodder pulled In the light of these facts, which the farmer can prove for himself if ho wants to, there is little doubt that it would be much better to grow plenty of forage other than corn fodder, and to leave the leaves on the corn stalks until the ears are fully matured. After the ears have been taken off 1 the stalk, the whole plant, leaves and all, might be cut and used for feed, and the value of this kind of feed is not to l)o disregarded as a filler which is at least* equal to cotton-seed hulls. Cattle will readily eat such roughage if it is cut fine, wet and well mixed with cotton-seed meal or other concentrated foods. The good cattle hi ought $40.00 per head more than the poor cattle. o TOMATO WILT. Clemson College, S. C.?Tf the leaves at the tops of the tomato plants, or at the ends of the branches begin to wilt, without being discolored or spotted, and this wilt gradually works back until the entire plant is affected, Tomato Wilt is in the patch. This disease is caused by a bacterium which gets into the tissues of the plant and plugs up the water carry ing vessels to such an extent that thej circulation is cut off, thus causing- the the plant to wilt. The bacterium which causes the (lis ease cannot be destroyed by spraying so all diseased plants should be pulled up and burned as soon as they become affected. If these plants are not destroyed, the disease will spread and the whole patch may be ruined. Wilt is easily carried from one plant to another by biting and sucking insects, and as they are probably the main carriers of the disease, the ' method of control aims at their destruction . The fewer insects of this kind in the field, the less will be ihe attack of the disease. The plants are sprayed with a mixture of 1-2 pound of paste, or 1-4 pound of powdered Arsenate of Lead to 12 gallons of bordeaux mixture. There is no danger in using this , mixture on the tomatoes. It is ; strong enough to kid the bugs, but a man would have to eat a bushel of tomatoes at one time to have any bad i effects from the poison. As the germ lives from one year to another in soil, tomatoes should not be planted on ground that has been infected. o Keep Your Hogs Healthy. WARNING TO FARMERS OF ATLANTIC STATES Outbreak of The True Army Worm May Be Now Impending. Washington, D. C., July 25.?An unusual abundance of the moth of the True Army Worm in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia indicates the possibility of an impending outbreak of this destructive pest in the Atlantic States. The moths, the entomologists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture report, were laying their eggs during the first week of July and as it takes from three to four weeks for the caterpillar to mature, their presence should betrin to he ouitp annnrpnf about the last week in July to the first week in August. Farmers should be on the alert to discover this pest in its younger stages, before it has reached a large size and has committed irreparable damage to growing crops, especially grasses and grains. Spray. When the army worm is discovered at work the iiiteslcd spots should bc spraycd immediately with a solution of powdered arsenate of lead, 2 pounds to 50 gallons of water. 11 Paris green be used the spray should be composed as follows: Paris green. 1 pound; freshly slaked lime, 2 pounds; water, 50 gallons. The lime is necessary as a preventive of burning by the Paris green which is quite caustic when used on tender plants such as corn. Poisoned Bran Bait. When spraying is impracticable the poisoned bran bait is recommended. P is made as follows: Wheat bran. 50 pounds; Paris green, 1 pound, o bite arsenic or powdered arsenate 01 cad 2 pounds; low-grade molasses, to 4 quarts. The addition of six finely chopped lemons has been found tv> add value to the bait in some cases. The poisoned bait should be scattered broadcast where the worms are at work or in heir path or among them while they are on the march. Ditching. When the army worms are moving together in a mass they may be halted and destroyed by plowing out or digging a narrow ditch with steep sides directly across their path. The worms fall into this ditch in large numbers and may then be crushed readily by dragging a log or chunk of wood back and forth through the ditch. Have Arsenate or Paris Green at Hand. The insecticides mentioned above will not spoil if kept in a dr\ condition in covered containers. Additional bodies found Wednesday j in widely separated districts of North Carolina brought the number of deaths from the recent floods up to seventy-three, with nine persons j missing and believed to be dead. The other deaths occurred in the J Bat Cave and Chimney Rock section, southeast of Asheville, where the Broad river raged through a narrow valley Sunday, carrying everything before it, and near Belmont, on the Catawba river. o County politics are now at the boiling point. ^I THKSX RED SPIDER PEST DAMAGES JONEY CROP This Small Mite Does More Damage Than Looks Reasonable HIS DESTRUCTION WOULD SAVE MONEY Destruction of All Weeds Around Farm During the Winter Months. The loss to cotton growers in the Southeast from the red spider may amount in some seasons to $2,000,000, according to a recent study of this post made by the department. Many planters believe that the cotton plants affected by this insect are suffering from rust. The injury, however, is not due to a disease, but to the presence on the cotton leaves of multitudes of the small mites commonly known as red spiders. These suck <> >? ? 1 ?..v jiiuco 11amii uie leaves and cause thorn first to redden or turn a rusty yellow over the entire surface, and timatoly to dry up and drop. The loss of foliage is always accompanied by shedding of bolls, and the yield troin the field is materially reduced. To prevent injury to cotton from this cause the department recommends, in Farmers' Bulletin 7115, by j 10. A. Mctlregor, the destruction of all weeds around the farm during* the winter and eariy spring, the spraying of certain cultivated plants around dwellings, the maintenance of a finely pulveried surface soil in the I cotton field, the destruction by plowing up and burning of plants on I areas that become infested early, and^ finally, spraying if the infestation becomes general. , ? , ? O r4 The rod spider may ravage cotton fit Ids at any time from the middle of June to the middle of September. Certain fields are infested while others in tho immediate vicinity remain quite free. The total extent of jury, however, is likely to be very serious. In 1912, for example, twofifths of the cotton crop in SoW-ll Carolina was damaged by this insect. The great mass of rod spiders pass the winter on wild plants. With the ' ?> first warm davs in the sorfnir thnv begin to multiply with great rapidity and it becomes necessary for them to seek new feeding grounds. They attack whatever weeds and garden plants they may meet and ultimately find their way into the cotton fields. In the late fall when cotton is no long or available for them the spiders migrate again to the wild plants, which arc frequently found in the borders of fields, and it has been ascertained that in many cases they infest violet beds. Altogether, this insect has been found breeding on nearly 200 specie^ of plants, the most common of which are cotton, cultivated violet, sow thistle, hollyhock. dahlia, garden beans, corn, tomato, onion, carnation, sweet nea. hedtro nr>iii?> a - f .. iiv vvi\'| 1KIO I 11 I I I 11 I I I * morning glory, clover, wild vetch, ironweed, Jerusalem oak, wild geranium, evening primrose, pokewecd, and strawberry. Many ol' these plants are useless weeds which can we'd be destroyed. Where this has been done in and around cotton fields, it has been found in several instances that complete immunity from the pest has been enjoyed the following season. Many cases of cotton infestation from the spider, however, can he traced fo cultivated plants in near-by deoryards. Svi h plants should be examined closely and sprayed as soon as they show any signs of infestation. The Government investigators have tested a large number of spray combinations in their work against the red spider and have found that the following are thoroughly satisfactory: (1) Potassium sulphid (1 ounce to 2 gallons of water); (2) lime-sulphur (home-made or commercial); (3) kerosene emulsion (prepared according to usual formula); (4) flour-paste solution (1 gallon of stock paste to 12 gallons of water). Any one of these sprays if properly applide will kill all the mites, but a second spraying: one week later is necessary to kill the insects that were in the egg stage at the first spraying Ic is also of the utmost importance to remember that the mite spends its life on the underside of the leaves. The entire underside of every leaf of an infested plant, therefore, must be hit by the spray in order to accomplish the desired result. Arsenical sprays are of no use against this pest.
